A plane takes off from New York and travels a total distance of 1,440 km to its destination at an average speed of 80 meters per second. It then returns along the same route at twice its original speed. How much time does the trip take? (Note: 1000 meters = 1 km)

Traveling 80 meters each second, the plane is traveling 80*60 meters each minute, and 80*60*60 meters each hour. Dividing by 1000, because we have 1000 meters in a kilometer, the plane is traveling 80*60*60/1000 = 8*6*6 km/hr. Since time = distance/speed, the time for the first part of the trip is 1440/6*6*8 = 120/3*8 = 5 hours. Returning at twice the speed will cut the time the trip takes in half, so the return trip takes 2.5 hours, for a total of 7.5 hours.

It is a round trip so distance for both rounds will be the same, i.e. 1440 KM.
Speed during first trip - 80 m/s.
Basic conversion from m/s to km/h - Multiply by 18/5
(80*18)/5 = 288 km/h
Speed during first trip = Double the speed during first trip = 288*2 = 576 km/h
Now, using the formula Time = Distance/Speed, time for both rounds can be calculated.
Time for first trip = 5 hours. Time for second trip = 2.5 hours.
Therefore, total time for the trip = 5 + 2.5 = 7 hrs and 30 mins
