in certain pegboard, each row of holes other than the bottom one contains exactly one more hole than the row below it. if there are 4 rows in all and 26 holes in the pegboard, how many holes are in bottom row?

Ans would be 2) 5..

Let's consider the bottom row has x holes..
So , x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) + (x + 3) = 26
.. , 4x + 6 = 26
So , x = 5

yep right. I went by backsolving by starting with 6 first. i.e 6+7+8+9 =30. So opted for 5. now its 5+6+7+8=26 holes & 4 rows

3 rows - n+(n+1)+(n+2)
Let x be the no of holes in the bottom row

n+(n+1)+(n+2)+x=26
3n+3+x=26
3n+x=23

23 -3(5 -no of holes)=23-15=8
23 -3(6 -no of holes)=23-18=5

Hence 5
