Hello,
I request for help on my doubts in the below mentioned sentence, which according to the Manhattan SC book is correct.
Sentence:
After all the gardening we did, the sun shining on the flowerbeds makes a beautiful sight.
Doubts:
1) Is After all the gardening we did an independent clause? If yes, please point out the subject and working verb in there. If not, then why?
2) If After all the gardening we did is an independent clause, then why is it not joined to the adjoining independent clause the sun shining on the flowerbeds makes a beautiful sight by a conjunction?

Hi Siddharth, it is not a clause. It is just a prepositional phrase. The structure basically is:
After all the gardening (that) we did.
The deconstruct is:
i) After all the gardening - prepositional phrase
ii) (that) we did - Relative clause (Dependent clause) modifying the noun gardening. Here, we is the subject and did is the verb.
So, technically speaking, after all the gardening we did has the following structure: Phrase + a Dependent clause.
Such structures function as Phrases in grammar. There is no Independent clause in this portion of the sentence.

A clause is a sentence i.e. Subject + verb + whatever else.
Independent clause or independent sentence is one that can stand on its own.
when you say this line, do you need anything else after it? NO.
the sun shining on the flowerbeds makes a beautiful sight
core sentence: sun makes sight.
After all the gardening we did -- then what? what we did after that. so this sentence need support and hence dependent clause.
After, before,even,though, unless, until etc. - these words when added to a sentence makes that sentence dependent. these in grammar called "sub-ordinating conjunction.
conjunction means add two clauses. so when the conjunction makes a clause dependent then it is subordinating conjunction.
when a conjnction connect two INDEPENDT clause then it is COordinating conjunction - AND,BUT etc.
