I often get confused between the usage of "instead of" and "rather than". I know "instead of" is used for substitution and "rather than" to show preference, however in SC questions i end up confused about which is more suitable.

If you have a mechanistic or grammatical approach for them please share.

Always use rather than unless there is some other error in the sentence ...
Gmat seems to avoid Instead of ...

In OG they have selected rather than over instead of as an answer, when both the sentences are correct .....

The rule is you must have a noun after instead of .. and yes GMAT prefers rather than

Thanks a bunch for your clarifications. I would look at keeping them in mind next time i encounter a question based on instead of vs rather than.

Try to use other errors to eliminate the incorrect answers. Usually, each sentence has two errors in each choice.

i agree with people here..GMAT prefers 'rather than' to 'instead of' as i have found that in quite a few cases
