I think D has a problem.

Look at the sentence

subject A new study suggests that the conversational pace of everyday life
first verb may be
so brisk that it hampers the ability of some children to distinguish discrete sounds and words,
and
second verb results
in not making sense of speech.

I think because children can not distinguish discrete sounds and words, that is the reason they are unable to make sense of speech.

Which is exactly what B does? so I think B is right and D is less plausible.
