Answer IMO B

Bunuel
Designed to attract maximum attention, billboard advertisers use cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before.

A. Designed to attract maximum attention, billboard advertisers use cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before.
Wrong modification of "advertisers" by "designed"

B. Designed as attractive, maximum attention-getting billboards are advertised using cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before.
Correct

C. Designed to attract maximum attention, cutting-edge digital billboards are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before, without static images and monochrome colors.
"without static images...colors" is not connected with the main stem of the sentence.

D. Designed for maximum attention attraction, cutting-edge digital billboards used by billboard advertisers, without static images and monochrome colors, convey more to passers-by than ever before.
Same error as C

E. Cutting-edge, digital billboards designed to attract maximum attention without static images and monochrome colors that are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before.
There is a missing verb in the whole sentence. Bonafide verb has been lost inside the modifying sentence starting with "designed..." and then "that" modifying "colors"...

A. Designed to attract maximum attention, billboard advertisers use cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before. Incorrect

Designed modifies advertisers, which is logically wrong; billboards should be designed to attract maximum attention

B. Designed as attractive, maximum attention-getting billboards are advertised using cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before. Incorrect

billboards are attractive, not attract people
run-on sentence - two independent clause must be separated by ';'

C. Designed to attract maximum attention, cutting-edge digital billboards are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before, without static images and monochrome colors. Correct

D. Designed for maximum attention attraction, cutting-edge digital billboards used by billboard advertisers, without static images and monochrome colors, convey more to passers-by than ever before. Incorrect

Designed for maximum attention attraction - sounds awkward

E. Cutting-edge, digital billboards designed to attract maximum attention without static images and monochrome colors that are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before. Incorrect

that modifies images and colors, that is not intended meaning; advertisers should use billboards not images and colors

between C & E - E eliminate only for that uses after colors
not sure about C for modifier - without static images and monochrome colors
but choose C

In my opinion noun modifier "without static images and monochrome colors" is supposed to modify "cutting-edge digital billboards"
And as per rule it should be nearest possible to intended noun.

So option C would have been better if "without static images and monochrome colors" had been placed near to "cutting-edge digital billboards" .

"Designed to attract maximum attention" incorrectly modifies "billboard advertisers" - it should modify the billboards. Eliminate.

B. Designed as attractive, maximum attention-getting billboards are advertised using cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before. The billboards are designed to "attract maximum attention" and not to be "attractive". Unnecessary change in meaning. Eliminate.

C. Designed to attract maximum attention, cutting-edge digital billboards are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before, without static images and monochrome colors. Correct answer - above errors are rectified and no new errors are introduced.

D. Designed for maximum attention attraction, cutting-edge digital billboards used by billboard advertisers, without static images and monochrome colors, convey more to passers-by than ever before. "Designed for maximum attention attraction" is very awkwardly worded - "designed to attract maximum attention" is much better. Eliminate.

E. Cutting-edge, digital billboards designed to attract maximum attention without static images and monochrome colors that are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before. Sentence fragment. Eliminate.

Hope this helps.

AndrewN - Request your insights on how option C is correct here?
My doubt is: How is this modifier ", without static images and monochrome colors" referring back to the noun "billboards"? The Modifier is not placed close to the noun.

Thank you AndrewN. I got your point, but it looks like a tough advise for me to let-go of grammar rules, because the same rules also help me to answer other questions correctly.

In this question, how would we know that Option C is not structurally incorrect when read for the first time? Is it after reading all other options that have other major errors should we re-read Option C if it is making some sense?

I could spot errors in all other options, which gave me a reason to eliminate them. My sense was that option C also has a misplaced modifier, but now I get your point that modifier if conveying the intended meaning can be correct even if it is not touching the noun.

The best thing you can do, Pankaj0901, is to let go of the so-called "touch" rule regarding modifiers and stop trying to force sentences into a rigid interpretation of what must be true. In this case, I see the without phrase modifying to convey, answering the question, How are billboards conveying information to passers-by? Take a look at the sentence again:

Quote:
C. Designed to attract maximum attention, cutting-edge digital billboards are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before, without static images and monochrome colors.
I could just as easily see the sentence being written in the following manner:

Designed to attract maximum attention, cutting-edge digital billboards are used by billboard advertisers to convey, without static images and monochrome colors, more [information] to passers-by than ever before.

I am telling you, just when you think you know everything about grammar and you have all your "rules" covered, something unexpected will show up and knock down your house of cards. Go for the easiest targets first, then see what is more or most debatable from the remaining answer choices and get rid of those options. Watch your accuracy increase when you are more open to the notion that you do not know everything. (I know it helped me.)

Thank you for thinking to ask me. I hope that helps.

I am not saying to throw all the rules out the window, just to appreciate that when it comes to grammar, you should not seek to create ironclad rules or force such interpretations on any given sentence. This is not the same as mathematics. You have five answer choices. Go through them more than once. In the first pass, see which sentences are the worst offenders and get rid of them. Also, you do not have to make a determination on the spot as to whether a sentence is optimal or even correct. If you are unsure about something, just put it on hold and look for easier eliminations. Then, in the second pass of the answer choices, look to attack whatever is left. Choose the least debatable answer.

When you approach a Sentence Correction question methodically but with an open mind, you will see a lot more than simple input-output, black-and-white rules.

Hi Abhik

IMO, the phrase that you refer to, "without static images and monochrome colors", answers the question, "How do billboards convey information to passers-by?". Therefore, it does not modify the noun "cutting-edge digital billboards" but the verb "convey".

Now, the position immediately following the verb always goes to the object of the clause. For example:

John kicked the ball.

The verb "kicked" is always followed by the object, in this case, "the ball". If we want to modify the verb, for example, to state that the kick was "very hard", we cannot place this modifier right next to the verb.

John very hard kicked the ball.
John kicked very hard the ball.

Both the above forms are incorrect. Therefore, the only logical place to have the modifier is after the object:

John kicked the ball very hard.

This does not mean that the modifier "very hard" is applicable to the immediately preceding noun "the ball" ie; it is not "the ball" that is very hard but "the kick".

The same thing is happening in option (C). Since the position immediately after the verb "covey" is taken by the object "...passers-by", the modifier of the verb appears after the object.

Hope this helps.

A. Designed to attract maximum attention, billboard advertisers use cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before.- This is not our answer (After the phrase "Designed to attract maximum attention", billboard advertisers is the wrong noun present, the phrase needs to modify digital billboards)

B. Designed as attractive, maximum attention-getting billboards are advertised using cutting-edge, digital billboards without static images and monochrome colors to convey more to passers-by than ever before. This is not our answer (Changes the meaning)

C. Designed to attract maximum attention, cutting-edge digital billboards are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before, without static images and monochrome colors. This is our answer ( "Designed to attract maximum attention" correctly modifies cutting-edge digital billboards.)

D. Designed for maximum attention attraction, cutting-edge digital billboards used by billboard advertisers, without static images and monochrome colors, convey more to passers-by than ever before. This is not our answer ("Designed for maximum attention attraction" is an awkward modifier construction, Option C is better version)

E. Cutting-edge, digital billboards designed to attract maximum attention without static images and monochrome colors that are used by billboard advertisers to convey more to passers-by than ever before. This is not our answer ("without static images and monochrome colors" ends up becoming the modifier.)

The OA is C.
