Never before had a ruler amassed a larger empire by conquest as Alexander the Great had in a scant twelve years.

A)a larger empire by conquest as Alexander the Great had needs: a + (comparative adjective) + (noun) + than
B)a larger empire from conquest as Alexander the Great "from" is not the correct preposition
C)so large an empire from conquest that Alexander the Great did "so large...that" is not a correct comparison, "by" is the correct preposition, not "from"
D)a larger empire by conquest than Alexander the Great amassed

E)so great an empire by conquest than Alexander the Great amassed so...than is not a correct comparison

Except for " by conquest" which is true in D, there is a right use of " amassed" . That is why this question is 700+. In C , we cannot use " did", because it violates the rule of "ellipsis". "Did" cant refer to "amassed", because it is not in the past simple tense but in the past perfect tense. If it were in the past simple, then did would be right.

I really do not like this question from kaplan. Actually is a question not in active voice, as it turns out I have never seen a question like this by GMAC

Back to the question: the split is between SO and A but after amassed you need A. As such we have A B and D

Larger needs than as rule. D indeed is the best choice

Is there a strict right wrong between "from conquest" and "by conquest" ?

please GMATNinja - help why are you not responding to my tags?

We don't spend too much time worrying about non-official verbal questions, and we recommend the same to our students. Please keep in mind that we receive literally hundreds of questions from GMAT Club members each month, and can't possibly answer everything, but we try to get to as many of the official questions as we can!
