I really do not like this question from kaplan. Actually is a question not in active voice, as it turns out I have never seen a question like this by GMAC
Back to the question: the split is between SO and A but after amassed you need A. As such we have A B and D
Larger needs than as rule. D indeed is the best choice

Hi,
The options reduce to A,D,E instantly because the correct usage for "conquest" is "by conquest" and not "from conquest".
A comparision word like "larger" should be followed by "than"... which goes like this.."Never before had a ruler amassed a larger empire,(by conquest),than..."
