It is the same. 'A' merely has a typo. In the future, press the 'Report a Problem' button and ask the mods to fix

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most bacterial populations grown in controlled conditions will quickly expand to the limit of the food supply, produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reached an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.

(A) produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reached an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.
expand...produced....and reached
Expand ends in a D, but it is not a past participle. It is simple future tense with will...expand. The will carries over to the others, but is not shown because of ellipsis.

Since expand is not underlined, the others must follow

simple future+ will past participle+ will past participle (x)

(B) will have produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth and also will reach an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.
expand...produced....and will reach
Simple future+will past participle+ simple future (with will unnecessary added again into the list) (x)

(C) will then produce a toxic waste product that inhibits further growth and thus reached an equilibrium state in a very short time.
will expand...will produce...and...reached
simple future + will simple future + 'no will' past participle

(D) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reach equilibrium.
(E) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reach an equilibrium state in a fairly prompt way.
expand...produce...reach. Nice parallelism
The quickly carries through to each verb, just as will does. quickly...in a fairly prompt way is redundant

D

How did you know that the "quickly" word is also being carried along with "will". If we just carry will (because we have no indication that the production of toxic waste is also being done quickly) then E option stands correct. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

Thanks!

Official Explanation

The three verbs in parallel are: “will expand,” “(will) produce,” and “(will) reached.” This shows the original error. Also, the adverb “quickly” will carry forward to all three verbs.

(B) fails for introducing a “have” for “produced.”

(C) fails to correct the “reached” and adds a gratuitous “then.”

(E)’s addition of “fairly prompt way” is an error, for level of usage.

(D) corrects the “reached” and drops the unneeded time of equilibrium, and the redundant “state.”

The correct answer is (D).

Hey sajid

what is the source of this question?
please correct me if i am wrong, i dont see any parallelism sets here ?
more over i find causality here ? i mean reaching equilibrium is not something that bacteria does right? it is the consequence of two opposite action right?
please help me

thanks

Most bacterial populations grown in controlled conditions will quickly expand to the limit of the food supply, produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reached an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.

Very first- equilibrium is it self a state so using state with equilibrium is redundant.

All answer except D is correcting this error.

Second- will is used for all verb tense so Expand, produce and reach are parallel.

Third- Quickly is modifying only expand not other verbs.

(A) produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reached an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.

(B) will have produced toxic waste products that inhibit further growth and also will reach an equilibrium state within a relatively short time.

(C) will then produce a toxic waste product that inhibits further growth and thus reached an equilibrium state in a very short time.

(D) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reach equilibrium.

(E) produce toxic waste products that inhibit further growth, and reach an equilibrium state in a fairly prompt way.
