D/E "their" S-V agreement violated hence out.

"Had" is required for past tense.

The viatnamese artist exhibiting work in the united states reported that one of her artistic challenges had been the former widespread unavailability of paper and canvas in wartime, which she said often forced her to work on matchboxes and scraps of newsprint.

a) her artistic challenges had been the former
b) her artistic challenges had been the formerly
c) her artistic challenges is the former
d) their artistic challenges is the former
e) their artistic challenges had been the former

could anyone answer and explain the answer please?

former is noun. the sentence needs adj (formerly) to modify adverb (widespread). So B seems correct.

Though I think answer is B, reasoning given above is wrong.
Adjective can NOT modify adverb, but adverb can modify adjective.
Here widespread is an adjective(modifying unavailability), which needs an adverb, formerly.

you are correct. i mistakenly reversed the rule: adv modifies the adj.

I go for B.

Former modifies Availability and not Widespread=> use of adj.

If we replace former with first, clearly "... had been the firstly widespread unavalability" sounds incorrect.

CDE are out due to tense or THEIR.

It's a question from Kaplan's diagnostic test. The OA is A.
