For correct comparison purpose, we have to compare event of escape to Interplaneaty space to any such event in past.
Answer C does this well

B. escaped into interplanetary space in the last three months as it did-- no reference

C. in the last three months escaped into interplanetary space as was the case --- correct

D. in the last three months had escaped into interplanetary space as -- incorrect use of verb

E. in the last three months escaped into interplanetary space than --- as many… than- [color=#ff0000]wrong

Hence OA is C
