B) with large clawlike "thumbs" on their wings, which probably helped it to (use of 'it' is wrong).

C) had large clawlike "thumbs" on its wings, which probably helped them (looks good just 'to' is needed before 'climb')

D) had large clawlike "thumbs" on its wings, probably to help it ('them' needed instead of 'it').

E) had large clawlike "thumbs" on their wings, probably to help it - (it? should be them)

A is my answer.

Nothing's wrong. A is the answer. 

C,D, E should not follow "had" after the comma...

For B we don't know what "it" refers to.

why can't we have "had" after the comma? i fee you can remove the scientific name, with the comma, and maintain the meaning of the sentence.

btw, I think the correct answer is D

What is that 'it' (before climb up) referring to? Subject (birds) is plural.
