As Russell Banks suggests, it is a lack of grand ideas that have only left writers with semiotics, hermeneutics, and deconstruction.

(A) As Russell Banks suggests, it is a lack of grand ideas that have only left writers with a lack of .. have (wrong S/V)

(B) Writers, Russell Banks suggests, who lack of grand ideas and leave only changes the meaning. A lack of... left writers with. Not writers who lack ...

(C) Russell Banks suggests that a lack of grand ideas has left writers with only

(D) It is Russell Banks’ suggestion that a lack of grand ideas have left writers only with a lack of .. have (wrong S/V)

(E) It is only a lack of grand ideas, Russell Banks suggests, which leave writers with if which refers to " lack of.." its a wrong (S/V)

One question. Written in this way, does "which" in option E modify "a lack of grand ideas" correctly or does it modify Russell Banks suggests, which makes even less sense?

Hello mskx,

in (E) 'which' seems modifiyng 'a lack of grand ideas'
which cannot modify a clause Russell Banks - subject suggests - verb :)

(A) As Russell Banks suggests, it is a lack of grand ideas that have only left writers with

(B) Writers, Russell Banks suggests, who lack of grand ideas and leave only

(C) Russell Banks suggests that a lack of grand ideas has left writers with only

(D) It is Russell Banks’ suggestion that a lack of grand ideas have left writers only with

(E) It is only a lack of grand ideas, Russell Banks suggests, which leave writers with

I was down to (C) and (D)

(D) has different meaning than original sentence.

suggest requires subjunctive that has a construction as follows

Sub + sub.verb( suggest)+that+ subject + verb(plural form)

we need verb in plural form

(C) Russell Banks suggests that a lack of grand ideas has left writers with only

Can someone explain why we have singular verb 'has' here?

Or this is again situation "Once you’ve eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” ? :(
