I managed to get this problem correct because it sounded correct in my ears. However, I really don't know exactly what makes it correct. The OA is D. I know, in general, that "by" usually comes when we have a passive sentence. However, there is no indication of passive verbs throughout the sentence. When is "by" used then? It confuses me.

The only option with 'begin' + another verb is D. I'm not sure if the correct usage of the passive voice is being tested in this SC at all.
