IMO (A) is correct. Other's are either grammatically incorrect or change the meaning of the sentence.

In order to survive, prisoners may have to adapt to the harsh conditions of jail, but to do so may be to lose much that is human and admirable in their original personalities.

A. In order to survive, prisoners may have to adapt to the harsh conditions of jail, but to do so may be to lose much that is human and admirable in their original personalities.

B. To survive, prisoners may have to jettison much that is human and admirable in the original personality

C. In order to survive, prisoners must adapt to harsh conditions of jail, thus losing much that is human and admirable of their original personalities.

D. Survival of jail may require the prisoners to discard much that was human and admirable from their original personalities

E. Survival in a harsh prison environment often requires the discarding of much that is human and admirable in the prisoner's original personalities.

I'll have to go for A. The other choices alter the meaning of the sentence. For example C chages from uncertainty "may have to adapt " to absolute certainty "must adapt". In B, In the original persanality is wrong, the should be plural possesive their inorder to refer to the plural prisoners
