Only b and c are close.
I choose B because there were two errors i figured in C.
1. The entity compared should be as close as possible.
2. Canals were 'often' flooded while in C 'methods were often system of Canals
B is precise and logical

I think answer - E

Unlike modern irrigation techniques, in which water is carefully distributed in small amounts rather than allowed to flow freely, the ancient Romans created systems of canals that often flooded and thus wasted water.

A. the ancient Romans created systems of canals that often

Incorrect - wrong comparison, modern irrigation techniques vs the ancient Romans

B. the irrigation methods of the ancient Romans consisted of systems of canals that often

Incorrect - methods consisted of systems of canals, sounds bad

C. the ancient Roman irrigation methods often were systems of canals that flooded

Incorrect - meaning change

D. the ancient Romans had canal systems for irrigation that were often

Incorrect - same as A

E. the methods of ancient Roman irrigation were systems of canals that often

correct

a,d,e are eliminated as they are not comparing the irrigation method.
b,c remain out of which c is a bit too wordy, so b is the correct choice.

Hello guys!

It took me longer for this question, but loved the reasoning here, and the structure of the question!

Let's use POE,

Eliminate Option A and D, the question clearly talks about comparing a modern scenario with an ancient one. So, statements A and D refrain from talking about the irrigation methods. So drop A and D without any guilt! :p

Option B seems good. We can come back to this later.

Eliminate Option C, the latter part 'often were systems of canals that flooded' seems wordy. So I won't adhere to this one for sure.

Option E was sort of close. But IMO, Option B is much better than Option E because it is less ambiguous and the construction is much better.
So, drop Option E.

IMO,
Answer:- Option B

Thank you!

PS- Please drop your 2 cents if the answer does not match your understanding.

Regards,

Idiom Unlike X, Y we are comparing the modern irrigation techniques to the irrigation techniques of ancient Roman.

In option A, C and D the comparison is incorrect as the irrigation technique is compared to ancient Romans.

In option B and E. In option E again the comparison is incorrect

IMO B

Official Answer

(A) The sentence compares modern irrigation techniques to the ancient Romans. This is not a valid comparison.

(B) CORRECT. This choice correctly compares irrigation techniques to irrigation methods.

(C) While this sentence correctly compares irrigation techniques to irrigation methods, it states that the ancient Roman irrigation methods… were systems of canals. This meaning is nonsensical. It implies that the methods consisted entirely of canals with no other components. Additionally, the placement of the word often indicates that the methods often were systems of canals, but not always. A more logical meaning is that the canals often flooded. Often should be closer to flooded, the word it modifies.

(D) This choice illogically compares modern irrigation techniques to the ancient Romans.

(E) While this sentence correctly compares irrigation techniques to methods of … irrigation, it states that the methods… were systems of canals. This meaning is nonsensical. It implies that the methods consist entirely of canals with no other components. Additionally, the modifier ancient Roman incorrectly modifies irrigation, but should modify methods.

C. the ancient Roman irrigation methods often were systems of canals that
D. the ancient Romans had canal systems for irrigation that were often
E. the methods of ancient Roman irrigation were systems of canals that often

The very first work unlike indicates that there is a comparison in the sentence. So it starts with an irrigation technique of particular period. So irrigation technique must be compared with the techniques .. Eliminate options A and D.

Option C distort the meaning because of modifier error - often modifies methods. However, in actual sentence it modifies canals.

Option E also distort the meaning. logic comparison is irrigation techniques of two particular period whereas E compares techniques with ancient roman irrigation.
