Hello everyone,
I have been going back and forth between applying to August-term or January-term. Because I already have 5 years of experience and I think I should get started with my MBA ASAP, acceptance rate is a game changer for me.
I have come across the below quote in a website (poetsandquants). Is there anyone who can confirm this data from any other source?
"Last year, CBS admitted 233 of the 528 applicants who applied under that January option for an acceptance rate of 44.1% (up from 41.3% the year before)"

Is commonly known that the acceptance rate for January term is much higher, but a big reason for that is because these are low-risk candidates to the school. They don't need an internship and so most likely they don't need Career Services either, so it's pretty easy for them to deliver the education and collect the money. Only apply if you really sincerely do not need an internship and it will not hinder your ability to get a full-time offer. If you're part of a family business, a serial entrepreneur, sponsored consulting candidate who does not want to change fields....these are the types of people should be applying.

Thank you very much for your answer! This helps a lot. My company will be sponsoring my MBA and I won't need an internship. Since I can start my MBA education earliest in 2020 H2, I am trying to decide whether to apply now for the term commencing in Fall 2020, and if it doesn't work out, to apply again for the term commencing in January 2021. My other alternative is to just focus on other schools for this period (commencing in Fall 2020), such as Harvard and Wharton, and try my chances only once for Columbia next year (for the term commencing in January 2021). Do you think getting rejected once for the August term would adversely affect my chances of getting accepted for the J-term in the next year?
I have also an additional question for you since you are the subject matter expert. I have also checked the acceptance rate of January and September terms of INSEAD. What I found was exactly the opposite of Columbia. September term acceptance rates are around 40%, whereas January term acceptance rates are around 20%. (Source: MBAdataguru) Do you think this makes sense in your experience?
