Question

Suggestion needed: If I had founded a small app during my college days but then it failed after few months-- How do I put this positively in my essay or should I not mention it at all

Bravely accepting a failure is a huge plus point. You can showcase an entrepreneurial mindset. Highlight your motivation for founding an app, what went wrong and your learning (should be in detail) from that. After this - you must highlight another example where you utilized the learning from failure.

I strongly recommend you to mention.

nidhipoddar31 : I partially agree with the previous post. There is nothing wrong with embracing failure. In fact, you probably will have to at some point in your MBA application whether that be in an essay or an interview. That said, I would not wholeheartedly embrace this app endeavor just because it was something you spent time on that did not work out. You do not have to mention everything you did or did not do. It all depends on the balance of your application. The application is supposed to be a summary of your best attributes and experiences, not a tell-all book of highs and lows. You may also have another failure that could be more meaningful for your growth that discussing this failed app. Again, it depends on what you choose to describe to the admissions committee. Hi,

I would absolutely highlight the app - what a great achievement.

Failure in businesses, particularly ones where you have got nothing more than an app, is extremely common (the rate sits at more than 99%). It goes to show your entrepreneurial spirit and taking risks.

If anything, just focus on the lessons learnt and how you would do it differently now with hindsight and also how this will change with an MBA degree will go a long way not just in your applications but also in your life. Studying an MBA equips you with structured thinking, functional and general management knowledge, stakeholder management, time management skills and gets you to exercise the brain cells you didn't think you had, what it doesn't do is to give you a business idea. Sure, it helps to expose you to different ideas that have worked which can help you generate new (and better) ideas and assists you in realising how to think about exploring different ideas but your idea is still your own.
