A community organization wants to restore the indigenous forests around the Mahurangi River in New Zealand by planting millions of trees along the banks of the river. Unfortunately, seedlings of indigenous tree species are expensive. At the beginning of the project in 2010, high-quality seedlings of common nonnative plants in the area cost around 0.30 New Zealand dollars (NZ$) each. By contrast, high-quality indigenous seedlings cost around NZ$3 each. Although scale did play a role, the principal cause of the price difference was the nursery methods used. Nonnative species were raised in open-ground beds utilizing mechanization, whereas indigenous species were typically raised in containers because of the perception that they are particularly prone to transplantation shock. The organization conducted a study to evaluate whether indigenous species could be successfully produced using the open ground method of forestry and to determine the approximate post-transplantation survival rates and foliage growth they could expect from seedlings raised in this manner. They planted a test plot with seedlings of six indigenous species commonly used for restoration plantings in the area. If we look at karamu, then the survival rate in open ground is greater than in large containers. So, this statement is not true for all. "They had higher survival rates after one year when grown in open ground rather than in either small or large containers" . If we look at manuka, then the survival rate in a large container is more than in open ground. So, this statement is not true for all. "They had smaller canopy spreads after one year when grown in small containers rather than in large containers or open ground" . Looking at the canopy spread chart, we see that the canopy spread in small containers is the smallest for all species. So, this statement is true for all. 2. Part 2. We need to find the species that will survive the most . Since each species is split into 3 equal groups, then we can simply add the number and see which one is the largest. Karamu. 0.93 + 0.87 + 0.96 = 2.76 Koromiko. 0.97 + 0.92 + 0.99 = 2.88 Manuka. 1 + 0.89 + 0.84 = 2.73 Harakeke. 0.96 + 0.93 + 0.95 = 2.84 Ti Kouka. 0.9 + 0.4 + 0.65 = 1.95 Toetoe. 0.59 + 0.31 + 0.59 = 1.49 So, our answer is Koromiko . 3. Part 3. We are asked to find which species will be included in the project . In other words, which species fit the needed requirements for open ground. Koromiko. Has a survival rate of 0.99, which is > 0.70. In addition, it has a canopy spread of 44 cm, which is > 40. So, Koromiko works. Manuka. Has a survival rate of 0.84, which is > 0.70. In addition, it has a canopy spread of 43.4 cm, which is > 40. So, Manuka works. Harakeke. Has a survival rate of 0.95, which is > 0.70. In addition, it has a canopy spread of 49.4 cm, which is > 40. So, Harakeke works.

Made me scratch my head for a while. Solid practice question!

in the 3rd question, it has mentioned average one year canopy spread, so why have we not taken the average here of all 3 and then worked around the question?

There is no average to calculate, you just look at the graph for the listed tree types and only use the data from the open ground portion - as that is the only category the question asks about.

i solved all of them correctly in 9mins 30sec but the average was around 6mins, so in total i spend extra 3mins 30sec on this question, so how should i reduce my timing on these kind of questions especially msr. the majority time like 4-5mins was spent on understanding the data set and graphs, and writing down some points about the seedlings.
