The flowchart shows the process by which a certain county determines whether to cancel school due to adverse weather conditions. If the air temperature (T), in degrees Celsius, is below a certain value, school will be canceled. If the air temperature by itself does not trigger cancellation, then a calculation of wind chill (W) is performed; this formula is dependent upon the air temperature and the wind speed (V). Finally, if air temperature or wind speed are expected to change by more than 10% within a 6-hour period, the calculations are repeated with the forecast values for T and V.
On the basis of the information provided, select from each of the drop-down menus the option that creates the most accurate statement.
1. If the air temperature is \(-20ºC\), then is the greatest integer wind speed that will result in a decision NOT to cancel school, assuming no changes are expected in the next 6 hours.
2. If the current air temperature is \(-28ºC\) and the current wind speed is 8, and no changes are expected in the next 6 hours, then school will .

Statement 1: 6.
In order to cancel school, either the T has to be below –30 (and it isn’t) or the W has to be below –30. Take the given information (T = –20) and plug into the W formula.
W = 0.5(–20) – 3V
W = –10 – 3V
What is the largest that V can be where W is not below –30? There are two ways to solve from here.
First, you could solve algebraically by setting W = –30 and solving for V; this is a direct approach but you have to know how to solve this way.
–30 = –10 – 3V
–20 = – 3V
20/3 = V
\(6\frac{2}{3} = V\)
The closest smaller integer is 6. (To use this approach, you also have to know that you need to pick something equal to or smaller than the solution.)
Alternatively, you could work backwards from the answer choices.
Glance at the answers and then look at the formula again.
W = –10 – 3V
The right side of the equation is already “at” –10 and then you’ll subtract 3V. What will happen if V is negative vs. positive?
If V is negative, then W will increase from –10. You’re trying to get as close as possible to –30, so V cannot be negative. Eliminate answers (A), (B), and (C). Since there are only 3 answers left, try them to see which one works. Because the problem asks you to find the maximum value of V, try the largest number (10) first.
W = –10 – 3(10) = –40
A wind chill of –40 would result in school being canceled; eliminate this choice. Try the next largest number, 6.
W = –10 – 3(6) = –28
A wind chill of –28 would not result in school being canceled, so 6 is the correct answer.
Statement 2: be canceled due to the wind chill
If the current T is –28, then school will not be canceled due to the air temperature, as the T has to be below –30 to cancel school. Eliminate answer (A).
Check the next step in the flow chart: the formula for W. Plug T = –28 and V = 8 into the formula to find W.
W = 0.5(–28) – 3(8)
W = –14 – 24
W = –38
The next step of the flowchart asks whether W is below –30. It is, so school will be canceled. Why? Because W, the wind chill, is below –30. In other words, school will be canceled due to the wind chill.
