I understand that the chart is designated by types of farmland, but I am curious as to why anyone would consider arid/desert a farmland subclass.

Thus I think the real answers are different than what is provided:

a) 61% * 13% / 74% = ~11%

and this includes wooded and grassland which I think are a generous subclassification of farmland.

b) .33 * 63 = 21 - > same answer

Even if “arid/desert” doesn’t look like classic farmland, in the diagram it’s included in the 100 % “farmland” total. Also, the right-hand bar is just a zoom‐in on the 13% of total farmland labeled “Arable" so the other classifications don't apply.
