For statement 2, why is the decline in wholesale trade not considered? It makes the statement false.
Ash381

Statement: The three industries that spent the least on employee compensation in 1941 all remained in the bottom three in 1945.
Sorting 1941 data in ascending order, we get Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries , Mining, Finance, insurance, and real estate but the bottom 3 in 1945 are: Mining, Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries , Contract construction. Final answer for this statement: False

Statement: The nongovernment industry in which employee compensation declined from 1945 to 1946 showed an increase from 1946 to 1947 equal to more than three times the previous year’s decline.
Checking the data from 1945 and 1946. The only 2 industries that have shown a decline are govt and manufacturing. Since we are looking for non govt industry, We can cross check the manufacturing data,
1945 --> 1946 = 40180 - 38259 = 1921
1946 --> 1947 = 44613 - 38259 = 6354 (1921*3 = 5700 ish) so this is more than 3 times. Final answer for this statement: True

Statement: During the war years of 1941 through 1945, government showed the highest employee compensation of any industry.
Checking the years, 1941 to 45. govt is never at first place in descending order. So, Final answer for this statement: False.

For statement 2, why is the decline in wholesale trade not considered? It makes the statement false.

Wholesale trade does not decline from 1945 to 1946 in the table, it increases.

Wholesale trade:

1945 = 5306
1946 = 6905

So the change is +1599, not a decline.

That is why it is not a candidate for “the nongovernment industry in which employee compensation declined from 1945 to 1946.” The only nongovernment industry that actually declines over that interval is manufacturing (40180 to 38259).

Wholesale trade did NOT decline from 1945 to 1946 - it actually INCREASED!

Let's look at the numbers directly from the table:

Wholesale Trade:
- 1945: 5,306
- 1946: 6,905
- Change: 6,905 - 5,306 = +1,599 (INCREASE, not decline!)

Which industry actually declined?
Looking at all non-government industries from 1945 to 1946:
- Agriculture: 2,514 -> 2,780 (UP)
- Mining: 2,261 -> 2,482 (UP)
- Manufacturing: 40,180 -> 38,259 (DOWN by 1,921)
- Contract construction: 3,106 -> 4,662 (UP)
- Transportation: 10,797 -> 12,176 (UP)
- Wholesale trade: 5,306 -> 6,905 (UP)
- Retail trade: 9,858 -> 13,315 (UP)
- Finance: 3,416 -> 4,294 (UP)
- Services: 8,931 -> 10,500 (UP)

Only Manufacturing declined!

Verification for Statement 2:
- Manufacturing decline (1945->1946): 40,180 - 38,259 = 1,921
- Manufacturing increase (1946->1947): 44,613 - 38,259 = 6,354
- Is 6,354 > 3 x 1,921?
- 3 x 1,921 = 5,763
- 6,354 > 5,763? YES!

Answer for Statement 2: TRUE

When scanning tables quickly, it's easy to misread direction of change. Always verify: Is the later number bigger (increase) or smaller (decrease) than the earlier number?

Hello
Please support explanation for statement 3, I think in Govt the employee compensation is the highest from 1941 till 1945, why is it false?

Look at the actual numbers.

In 1941–1944, Manufacturing is higher than Government:
1941: Manufacturing 22774 vs Government 10552
1942: 32247 vs 16381
1943: 42657 vs 27091
1944: 44958 vs 33780

Government is highest only in 1945. Since the statement says “during 1941 through 1945,” it must be highest in all those years, which is not true.
