B. The mind recognizes a given object as a whole; it has no need to analyze the object’s constituent parts individually.

I dont think this is a correct option. I pondered upon this for some time then realised its first part is correct. But we can't say anything about its mechanism. What if the object's constituent parts are indeed analyzed individually but parallelly? Its same like what happens in a 'Transformers ' in Machine learning. But let's not go there. I just want to say what if they are indeed analysed 'Parallelly' and 'Individually'? We dont know anything about mechanism of parallel matching.

For example there are 100 individual parts in an image. So Serial theory says all will go one by one but parallel theory only says it will be single step process. But i am saying what our brain matches those 100 individual parts all at once? Then all 100 parts are indeed analysed individually but also at the same time so it will be a parallel process.

1. According to the passage, psychologists of the Gestalt school assume which of the following about the process of visual recognition?

You can arrive at the correct answer to this question by elimination. First, quickly scan the passage looking for the key word Gestalt. The sentence mentioning Gestalt psychologists states they maintain that objects are recognized as wholes in a parallel procedure. The sentence immediately preceding defines a parallel procedure as one that takes only one step.

Now examine the statements. Do Gestalt psychologists maintain that an object’s retinal image is exactly the same as its internal image? Statement
is unsupported by the passage.

Statement B is supported by the passage: lines 10–11 (Gestalt psychologists contend that objects are perceived as wholes in a parallel operation:)indicate that Gestalt psychologists believe objects are recognized as wholes.

Statement C is supported by the passage: lines 11–12 indicate that Gestalt psychologists believe matching is a parallel process that occurs in one step. Choices B and C are both correct.

Answer: B,C

Hello mkeshri185

You are thoughful on the question but read the following lines from the passage:

"Gestalt psychologists contend that objects are perceived as wholes in a parallel operation: the internal image is matched with the retinal impression in one single step."

The “as wholes” phrasing implies the object is not broken down into individual features for separate analysis, whether serial or parallel. Instead, the whole configuration is matched at once. If the parts were analyzed individually (even in parallel), that would still be a parts-based analysis, which contradicts the core Gestalt principle that “the whole is different from the sum of its parts.”

In Gestalt theory, perception is holistic and configural, not a composite of independent features processed separately. So B is correct because “has no need to analyze the object’s constituent parts individually” means parts are not individually analyzed, they are processed only as part of the whole pattern.

The confusion might be in thinking that parallel feature analysis could still happen, but that’s actually more aligned with other schools’ parallel models of feature detection, not the Gestalt view described here. The passage clearly contrasts:

Gestalt: whole ----> matched in one step.
Other schools: individual features matched serially.

So (B) stands
