When a line passes through the origin, (0, 0), the x- and y-coordinates of any point on the line will vary directly with each other. In other words, there is some constant, k, for which \(y = kx,\) so the x-coordinate of any point on the line (in Quadrant I) will be greater than the y-coordinate, and a > b, making (A) is greater. As the slope is less than 1. Think of this as meaning that the “rise” is less than the “run,” so that the “up amount” of any point on the line, or its y-coordinate, is less than the “across amount,” or its x-coordinate. This makes \(b < a,\) and \(a > b.\)
