Hi,

angle x is on line A and angle y is on line D, so a relation between x and y is possible if line A and line D are parallel..

lets see the statements-

1) Line A || line C
We require realtion between A and D..
Insuff

2) Line B || line D
We require realtion between A and D..
Insuff

Combined..
still no realtion between A and D..
Insuff

Statement 1) Line A//line C

We do not have any info that Line A // Line B or D.
so we cannot say that x =y or x+y = 180
so not sufficient.


Statement 2) Line B//line D

We do not have any info that Line B // Line A or C. so not sufficient.
so we cannot say that x =y or x+y = 180

Even after combining no such info can be obtained.

E is the answer.

We can modify the original condition and the question. If line A and line D are parallel, x+y=180. However, since conditions do not state that line A and line D are parallel to each other, the correct answer is E.

- Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. In DS, Variable approach is the easiest and quickest way to find the answer without actually solving the problem. Remember equal number of variables and independent equations ensures a solution.
