If s = (x + y)^2 and t = (x - y)^2, what is the value of 2^s/2^t ?
(1) xy = 12
(2) x/y = 3
(1) xy = 12
(2) x/y = 3

Q-stem :2^s/2^t = 2 ^ (s-t)= 2^ [4xy] ==> Its basically asking the value of xy .
(1) xy = 12 -- Sufficient
(2) x/y = 3 -- NS

\(\frac{2^s}{2^t}=2^{s-t}\)
Now let us find \(s-t = (x + y)^2 -(x - y)^2=(x^2+y^2+2xy)-(x^2+y^2-2xy)=4xy\)
so \(2^{s-t}=2^{4xy}\), so we have to find 4xy
(1) xy = 12..
so \(2^{4xy}=2^{4*12}=2^{48}\)
sufficient
(2) \(\frac{x}{y} = 3\)
we cannot find xy from this
insufficient
