If x < 2, can y be equal to 2?
(1) x – y > 3
(2) x -2y - 4 = 0
Statement 1:We have \(x > 3 + y \) or \(3 + y < x\). Combined with \(x < 2\) we can conclude \(3 + y < x < 2\), and extract \(3 + y < 2\).
So we know \(y < -1\), therefore it cannot be equal to 2. Sufficient.
Statement 2:\(x = 2y + 4\), plug into \(x < 2\) to get \(2y + 4 < 2\) and \(y < -1\). Then y cannot be equal to 2. Sufficient.
