Properties of intersecting lines

1. The intersecting lines (two or more) meet only at one point always.
2. The intersecting lines can cross each other at any . This angle formed is always greater than 0o and less than 180o .
3. Two intersecting lines form a pair of vertical angles. The vertical angles are opposite angles with a common (which is the point of intersection).
Here, ∠a and ∠c are vertical angles and are equal.
4. ∠a + ∠b = <b + <c= straight angle = 180°
statement 1: c=120
<a = <c = vertically opposite angle therefore, SUFFICIENT
statement 2: b=60
<a +<b= 180 (straight angle)
or <a = 180- <b = 180-60=120
therefore, sufficient

Target question: What is the value of a ?
Statement 1: c = 120
Since opposite angles are equal, we know that a = c
So, if c = 120, then a = 120
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: b = 60
Since angles on a line must add to 180° we can write: a + b = 180
If b = 60, we get: a + 60 = 180
Solve to get: a = 120
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT
Answer: D
