What is the value of x^2 + 1/x^2 ?
(1) x + 1/x = 2
(2) x^2 - 1 = 0
(1) x + 1/x = 2
(2) x^2 - 1 = 0

(1) \(x+\frac{1}{x}=2\)
Square both sides
\((x+\frac{1}{x})^2=2^2\)
\(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}+2*x*\frac{1}{x}=4\)
\(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}+2=4\)
\(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}=2\)
(2) \(x^2=1\)
Substitute in the equation \(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}\)
\(1+\frac{1}{1}=1+1=2\)
