Question: On the number line, are the points x and y on different sides of zero?
We can use visualization to solve the question.
Statement 1(1) The distance from x to zero is equal to the distance from y to 1.
Statement 1 just gives us the information of the distance between x and 0 and the distance between y and 1.
We can't infer which side of 0 either of the variable will lie (as shown in case 1 and case 2).
Hence we can eliminate A and D.
Statement 2(2) The sum of the distances from x to 0 and from y to 1 is less then 1
Even with this information we can have the variable places on the number line so that both of them can lie on the same side of zero, or both can lie on the opposite side of zero.
The statement is insufficient. We can eliminate B.
At this stage itself we can conclude that combination will not help.
CombinedThe statements combined merely tells us the distances are equal and the sum is less than 1. However the information doesn't provide information on the relative position.
Hence the statements combined wont help.
