Am I Crazy to Retake

Question

Ok I don't want to sound ungrateful... I did just get a 730. The problem is my scores where very far off. I got a 98% in V but only a 70% in math. I am happy with my overall score, but here schools may look more at the verbal score. I also am worried because I emphasize my quantitative skills in my app. THOUGHTS?

First off you did get a good score - so congrats on that.

How did you score stack up against your practice tests? Was your quantitative score meaningfully higher in your practice tests?

If so, I think you could make the argument on why you would want to retake the test.

If not, then its a real tough-one to answer.

Most of my practices are like in the 85%M so i for sure did worse, but I did do slight better on V then I expected but not by much

That is tough. On the margin was your verbal out-performance materially higher than your quantitative under-performance?

I guess you could say that. I was about 10-15 percentiles below my avg math and about 3-5% above my average V

What are your scaled scores? Here's my take on this. If you have already emphasized your math skills in the essays, you don't really need to correlate it again with your GMAT score. Especially if you're from a math-type major - engineering, sciences etc.

I was actually in your same situation (although the V and Q scores were somewhat swapped). I retook it about 1 and 1/2 months after and got a much better score. I would recommend retaking it if you honestly believe that you can do better, BUT (and a BIG BUTt) since you're somewhat late in the game (i.e., for round 1), you might want to consider moving on.

Obviously, if you're not applying for round 1, then the former recommendation stands.

Definitely retake, GMAT is way too important for MBA admissions. Take a few days off and start studying. Good luck.

What schools are you aiming for? A 730 generally does not warrant a retake, I do not believe your spread is large enough to cause concern. If you stressed your quant skills in your app then good, you could potentially be explaining the low quant score was a fluke.

Jinglander: What about your GPA, and in particular your grades in quant courses? If you did excellent work in quant courses in college, and if you can use the essays to demonstrate that your quant chops are still strong, I don't think you have anything to worry about. A 730 is a great score!
