Cool enkie, sounds like youre making some really good progress.

You really need to tie down those timing issues on Q, and it's really just a matter of learning to let go.

At ~2 minutes if you dont have an answer, and you dont know how to solve it, guess and move on (eliminating answer choices if you can).

At ~3 minutes if you're not seconds away from solving it, guess and move on (eliminating answer choices if you can)

If you're already a bit behind schedule, then you'll have to be more aggressive in your timeline for when to guess and move on

Thanks for your advice; this is very helpful. I think you are absolutely right about the timing. This weekend I plan to take 2 CATs, one on Friday (yay have the day off!), and one on Sunday. I'll be practicing letting go and building up endurance. Will report back!

Ok, just took a GMATPrep practice test. Am feeling very happy and confident about my results so far. Scored 710 (Q45, V42)! Will update the original post to show progress.

Nice score! And it is consistent with your other results. Looks like you'll be hitting a score somewhere around this. For the remaining few days, are you going to concentrate on the math section and try to boost it? A score of Q47-48 would push you into the 740 - 750 range.

Thanks! Yes I think I must. I think the few areas I have to strengthen and review in are: combinatorics, probability, some rates/times problems (i need to memorize so it's second nature which portions to add together, setting up equations, etc.), and a little bit of mixture problems (totally forgot about those until they floated up in the latest exam).

I did some scholarship research last night, and saw that Insead (one of my top target schools) has a lot of women specific scholarships that require gmat minimum. I am gunning for 2 in particular that requires 720 or above. So now I MUST hit a high score! :)

How is your own studying going? Or did you take it already?

Those 4 quant areas you mention definitely show up at a 45+ level. You have 12 more days remaining. I think that should give you enough to master at least 3/4 areas, no? :)
Yes. Scholarships are another thing I am after. And in most cases, the GMAT seems to be a factor. So I need to hit a high score too.

My studies are going on fine - Over the weekend I have been working on Sentence correction primarily. I still havent started CR. RC is kinda in the middle. 6 more weeks to go for me - 25 July, 1 month after you. I am getting slightly nervous about the Verbal part. I got V38 last time and I want to boost it to a 42, primarily to boost my total GMAT score. I want both my quant and verbal to be in the 85%+ range (at the min) with an even split.

Keep this thread active or give me an update once you finish more CAT's or cover more areas. :)

WIll do definitely! Good luck to you. I think you have quite a bit of time. In my humble opinion, SC is all about practice. I also compiled an idioms list that I glance over 2 - 3 times a week so my brain gets used to spotting them.

What book are you using for CR? I thought the CR bible was great in helping me tackle the difficult questions.

And yes I agree, 12 days should be enough to beef up those areas. I think R/T is a matter of memorizing stuff, mixture is ok once I do some practice questions so my mind doesn't forget it -- big issue is Com/Prob, so I'll be working hardest on those :D

Don't be so humble. You are scoring 45 on the verbal section, which is amazing! More advice and tips appreciated! :)

I am doing this too.

I love the Powerscore CR bible. I was scoring pretty highly on the CR the last time I took the GMAT. So I guess I am not too worried about this section. I really need to beef up my SC and RC preparation. Only that can help me get past 42-43 on verbal.

PRACTICE TEST SUMMARY
*MGMAT Feb 27, 670 (Q42, V39)
*MGMAT Apr 1, 640 (Q43, V35)
*Kaplan Apr 15, 620 (Q41, V31)
*Kaplan Apr 17, 610 (Q40, V32)
*Kaplan Apr 23, 620 (Q40, V34)
*MGMAT May 10, 680 (Q44, V38)
*MGMAT Jun 7, 740 (Q46, V45)
*Official GMATPrep June 12, 710 (Q45, V42)
I see that up until May 10, you pretty much had a verbal score of around 38. But after 1 month, in Jun, your score shot up to 45 and then 42 after that.
I scored 38 in verbal section in my first attempt and I am trying to get that score to 42+, primarily to boost my overall score. Can you tell me what you did in that gap of 1 month between May and June that got your score up??

I think my problem may be very different from yours. My problems were primarily the following:

1. SC, still trying to commit all sorts of grammar rules to my brain so it becomes second nature.
2. CR on the 700 - 800 level questions.
3. RC, i lost focus and zone out after reading 3 sentences.

To address my SC question, I rigorously reviewed my errors and commit the solution to those errors to memory. I think my problems were primarily idioms and parallelism. I did all of the SC problems in the 12th official guide as well as the official verbal review. Then I did the practice questions in Manhattan GMAT's online question bank (since I purchased the MGMAT SC book). Hand typing my verbal notes seem to help me commit these things to memory. If you have a Kaplan book, i would do all of their online quizzes and the CD quizzes for SC practice. Bottom line, practice practice practice until SC becomes second nature and more of a pattern recognition game.

2. CR. you dont have a problem in this area. But my score shot up after I finished the CR bible.

3. RC. I realized that Kaplan's strategy of skim and make content map worked only half of the time for me. So what I did instead is to stop skimming. When I skim the passages, not only am I sloppy, I also lose focus. Instead, I really took the time to read the passage through, and I also made the content map so it's easier to locate key passages depending on what the question asks me. I find that if I understand the passage 60 - 80%, I answer the questions better. Of course, this strategy is a lot more time consuming, so it really helped that my SC (after months of practice) sped up.

I really think #3 is dependent on #1. Because I got more confident and much faster in doing SCs, it gave me time to really read the RC instead of skimming. When I skimmed, I answered wrong 50% of the time.

Oh another note on RC. I read somewhere that many RC questions are really just a very long CR question. And shifting my brain to think this way helped me score better in this section.

Sorry, lastly, I think it's worth mentioning that I think the reason why my verbal was not as good prior to June because my brain was still learning all the rules and as a result I was slower, sloppier, and often over analyzed each question. I took a vacation break in May and came back with a lot more clarity and things just suddenly clicked. I think my brain really needed a break.

I think I am at this stage right now. I am trying to commit SC rules to my brain and it is slowly taking effect. I hope to have most of the rules down by the end of this week. And then I plan on just doing practice questions.

I have been hand writing my SC notes, and it is helping me a lot. I only have the usual Kaplan 2009 program CD. Thats enough I guess. I also have OG and Knewton. :)

Interesting. I am following Knewtons method of making MAPS and it is working out quite well for me. The process keeps me engaged and though I end up spending a little more time reading through a passage, I am more confident while answering questions.

Well, I spent my memorial day weekend at the Grand Canyon. Took a few days off and went camping. My vacation time is over. Time to bring it. :)
Thanks for all your speedy answers. They were very uselful. :)

So I should have known that taking a GMAT practice exam after waking up at 630AM, working a 10 hour day, and having fried chicken for dinner (girl must reward herself sometimes!) was a stupid stupid stupid idea.

Score totally bombed.

Will refresh and recharge today and take the practice exam when i am not exhausted.

Hah. I have mine at 1 in the afternoon. I am trying to getting used to staying alert at around 1 after lunch. I try to stick to a light lunch like salads and such. But I'm always yawning at 1. :) Are you taking another practice CAT today? All the best if you are.
