Hi Aspirants,
I have recently appeared for the GMAT on 9th june 2011. All along the test I was feeling pretty confident that I was performing really well and infact I was eagerly waiting to see my final score as I was expecting a pretty good one. And final when I pressed the show scores button I was shocked and shaken to see my score which read:
Quant 49
Verbal 33
Score 670
This was a score which I least expected to see on the GMAT.
My mock scores are as follows with the dates taken on:

15/04 Princeton Review-1 660(45,37)

After scoring consistenly on Verbal in the last month before the actual GMAT, I am reall devastated to get a 33 on the actual GMAT. And as mentioned, throughout the test I felt that everything was going great.
Please post your views regarding the above debacle. And do post any queries regarding the GMAT.
Will be looking forward to advice and what to do next.

I'm sorry to hear that you scored was below your expectation. I had a similar experience 6 months back when I took my GMAT and scored 680. My test scores ranged from 660 to 750 and the actual test seemed to go smoothly with only a few difficult questions. I was confident in scoring above 700 but that was not meant to be. What threw me off was my verbal score. I consistently scored above 42 in all my practice tests but scored only a 36 on the actual test.
Just like you, I was also confused about what happened. However, after some introspection, I realized that my verbal skills, though strong, did have a few weaknesses.
I concluded that since this is a percentile based score, others who took the GMAT probably made fewer mistakes than I did.
Your average practice test score is around 700 which, +- 30 is where your actual test score lie. So while you scored good on certain practice tests, maybe you did so because those verbal questions tested your strong skills rather than the weaker ones. You'd probably want to do an in-depth analysis on your past verbal questions and the skills tested there to see if you can find a pattern or isolate weaker areas.
From what I have read and understood, a few wrong answers in verbal can result in a larger score difference on verbal than on quants.
then again, I am not an expert. I hope some of the GMAT experts can give a more scientific explanation.

You may have run into some bad luck and got a few of these verbal questions wrong in a string-like fashion. But looking at your practice scores, you range seems to be around 700. There's always some jittery when you're taking a real exam and that may have played a role in your score as well. If I were you, I'd rest up for a bit and retake the exam. I think you'll be able to break the 700.
