I took the GMAT yesterday and got a 730 (Q49 V40).
Like most people have previously mentioned, the gmat is getting tougher. But I didn't really notice more difficult math questions rather than new concepts requiring one to think outside the conventional gmat math box. I took my exam at 3:15 PM yesterday (Oct 29th).
Although my score is pretty good, I am honestly disappointed in my both my quant and verbal scores. The first math question was easy and I knocked it out in 20 seconds. I wasn't ready for the questions that followed from question 3 to 11, I was given questions that I didn't even know how to tackle and those that were doable were taking more than 3 minutes to solve. As a result, I was forced to guess on several questions. I knew I was doing badly because the 11th question simply asked me to take the square root of a fraction and the following question basically asked me to add up two numbers. I was able to answer numbers 11 to maybe 27 without much difficulty and the difficulty level finally ramped up to what I was used to. I got hit with a nasty geometry question on number 30, which took a little time. After a long early stumble on math I was back to normal but I knew it was too late to get a 50 or 51 even with the experimental questions. I honestly thought I was going to get a 44 or 45 in quant so I'm relieved if anything.
I thought I had messed up badly on math and assumed that a high verbal score was the only thing that could save me at this point in the game. I took my second break and ate a Twix chocolate bar and drank some gatorade. The verbal started off with two easy SCs (my strength). When I got to my first CR, although I was able to solve it, I felt that it was slightly different (maybe harder.. not sure) and not as elegant as the CRs in GmatPrep. In some CRs I was seeing two answers that could both be correct and that forced me to re-read the stimulus in order to eliminate. This process kept shedding some time off the clock. The first CR passage was relatively easy. After the first passage, the ONLY thing that I dreaded occurred. The exam slapped me with not one, but TWO women's rights passages in a row(The only passages that for some reason I could not do well on, in both MGMAT and GMATPrep CATs). I answered the questions to the best of my ability (see concentration) and moved on hoping that one of them was an experimental passage. Answered some more CRs and SCs. I'm 99% sure I answered all of the SCs correctly. The CR questions are changing (not too drastically) and I got unlucky with the passages. With all that said, I finished my last question with 3 minutes left.
I answered all the demographic questions of the exam and closed my eyes when the score screen popped out. I raised my hand and the proctor came over and congratulated me. Then I opened my eyes and saw a 730. Considering I thought I had bombed the math I was pretty relieved with my even split. However I felt that a 40V was on the low end of my prep and that the math got to me at the beginning. I am considering retaking the test next month but not sure how much value a 770 would add to a 730. I also just graduated from college this June and am working full time as an engineer. I will only become busier as time progresses.
My GmatPrep and MGMAT Scores are in my signature for those who need a comparison. I studied for approximately two months and for 20 hours a week. I used the 5 MGMAT Math guides and didn't really do much for verbal other than Powerscore CR Bible and the GmatPrep SC and CR documents the week leading up to the exam.
I want to thank everyone on this forum for providing early insight when it came to this test. This forum helped me pick the best prep materials and I did not have to waste time and money on unnecessary resources.
