Hi,
First of all let me give a quick introduction about myself. I'm a 29-year old brazilian engineer from one of the top universities in Brazil, I have always wanted to apply for a top MBA school but every year something new showed up and I kept on postponing it. Over the past few years I have seen many classmates of mine going to their MBAs and this year I decided to stop procrastinating. I took my decision in march/april and started my preparation in mid-june (had to study for the CFA before). Quant has always been easy to me and even on my 1st mock exam ever I was able to get a Q49. The verbal part, however, has always been my biggest challenge, specially SC.
I gathered all the
MGMAT guides, the OG12 and the GMAT Prep (with the additional CAT exams/questions) and focused my studies pretty much on the verbal part. Although I though I was improving, my verbal grade has always been much more volatile than my quant grades (these always ranging between 48-50). After taking a few
MGMAT and GMAT Prep CAT exams I thought I was well-prepared for facing GMAT and got to the exam very motivated after scoring my record high of 750 on the night before the exam (and also improving my grades after every exam I took).
Here are my CAT tests from GMAT Prep:
700 (Q49 V 37; a couple of weeks ago),
720 (Q48 V41),
730 (Q50 V39) and
750 (Q50 V41) - yesterday !!!!
At the test center, everything started great, I wasnt nervous, tired or anything, managed to do just fine in the AWA (didnt get the results of this one yet, but since I almost didnt study for this section I wasnt so confident that I would be able to find flaws and write a decent AWA). On the IR section I had some timing issues on the beggining, but I managed to catch up and got a reasonable 7. Took the break to rest a little and when I came back to the quant part no surprises there too, I had to speed up a little more at the last 5 questions, but timing was just perfect (luckily the last question was a very easy one) - however I must say that I got a little worried for getting some easy questions every now and then, and I dont know exactly if I did a proper preparation on the quant part but I didnt find any of the questions really "challenging", I mean, some were difficult, but there wasn't a single question that I didnt know how to answer (quite sure that the difference between the perfect score of 51 and my 50 was a silly mistake or some tricky question). Again, took a break and came back to the verbal section, and this is where things didn't go as planned. Started to get stuck in early questions, changing my mind about answers more often than I should and finally when I noticed that I was late I tried to compensate and this probably dragged me even further. At the end, I knew I didnt do very well and I had to guess the last 4 questions.
At the end, a decent score, but I had in my mind that I would not retake GMAT if I got a 720+ and would definitely retake if I got a 700-, not so sure about what to do now, but I must say that my plans up to today are finishing my MBA essays and if possible spare 1-2 weeks to study a little more and retake the GMAT.
Any comments/thoughts are more than welcome, should I try to retake the exam? I'm aiming at the top MBA schools with an average between 715-735. I'm not sure if my line of reasoning is correct, but I dont see any downside in not retaking the GMAT, since if I do worse than I have (always a possibility, but I think that I made a serious mistake in managing my time correctly on the verbal section and would possibly pay more attention to this on a next time) I could always share only the results of my 1st test and if I do better, oh well, ...
