Hi all,
I am a GMAT test retaker and a non-native. Got a mere 580 (Q44, V25) on the test day last week. Previous 2 GMAT attempts the scores were :- in 2006 - 620 and in 2009 610 (both are NOT active scores anymore)
I am working as a Business Consultant in a top tier IT MNC and have close to 13 years of full time work experience in the same MNC. I have been studying on and off for the last 10 months (not continuous due to work load). I could only devote around 2-3 hours per day on weekdays and weekends didn’t get much time due to personal commitments. It was in April this year when I decided to give the preparation a push and even though I had completed OG 13 , OG 10 and Kaplan guides, I was really not confident of my Verbal. So I enrolled for GMATPILL online course. Barring the RC pill – which is pretty good I did not find other sections helpful. Gave a few Mocks (GMATPREP,
MGMAT) but scores were really not reaching the expected score of 700+. That’s when I decided to attend a eGMAT seminar and found it useful. I enrolled for SC online. After having gone thru it, I found its good but I was not able to adhere to 3-step process to solve the questions at all times, one because I used to take close to 3-4 minutes if I followed that approach. Having said that it was useful in learning as a whole and I then enrolled for complete eGMAT’s GMAT Online course. CR prethinking advocated by Rajat was interesting but still it was ok till the point I get a simpler CR but as soon as I see a slightly difficult CR I never used to get it right. However I must point that bulk of my eGMAT course study I did was in last 2 weeks prior to actual test so not sure if me practicing a few more questions in CR and SC especially could have improved my timing .
My TAKT time on SC and CR were 1.5 and 2.4minutes – which was not good. I took some weeks off from work prior to my GMAT. Solved entire GMAT Online course by eGMAT in those 2 weeks but timings didn’t improve for verbal especially. I found its Quant course really useful. Took GMATPREP exam pack 3 and 4 but got only 620 and 610.
On the test day, I was pretty calm and confident of a decent score…In my mocks I found that I am making the bulk of mistakes in last 12-14 questions in each section. And even though as per eGMAT and other experts, first 10 questions if you get them right you should reach a decent score. This seem to be not working for me. I made strategy where I dedicated more time for first 12 and last 12 questions , guessed around 3-4 questions from 13-30 in Verbal to enable this extra time. Quant was not an issue.
But I found that I am not able to reach a conclusive answer for most of my Verbal questions and finally ended up with a V25 and total score of 580.
Am not sure whether this kind of score even stands a chance for any good US bschools such as UCLA/NY STERN (am targetting Entertainment industry managerial jobs post-MBA).
Would be great to hear views from experts here.
Thanks
