Hi,
I took my GMAT after months of intense study. My strength has always been verbal, but worked consistently on quant to improve my score. I started out with GMAT Prep 1 at 640 gmat prep 2 - 660, GMAT prep 3 - 660, GMAT prep 4 - 640... then with a break for practice and revision I went back and did the tests again... I got a 710 in GMAT 1, 730 in GMAT prep 2 and a 700 in gmat Prep 3... there were some repeat questions but very few that i could remember the answers to. Also took the economist GMAT prep test and got a 660... on average I was scoring between 38 and 49 in quant and 38 and 44 in verbal... I also took some tests at the prep centre I enrolled at and was scoring within the same range on those tests as well. On the final test day I got a 530... 35 in quant and 27 in verbal. Needless to say I was shocked. I expected a max 20-30 point variation, but not more. Can u tell me what went wrong?
I took my practice tests at the same time as the one booked on the official test day.
All the prep tests I took were full length tests (AWA, IR included)
I tested primarily at home and didn't take more than the required amount of break time
I wasn't sleeping too well the week before the exam but I forced myself to sleep well the night before.
The environment at the test centre did get to me a bit.
I got 4 RC passages 3 of them had 4 paras each, so for the first time ever I ran out of time in the verbal section. (last 3 questions were random guesses) The time pressure might have contributed to the low score, but I assumed that I was only getting tough questions coz I was doing well in the verbal section. Clearly I was wrong.
Also, after the devastating result I took some time out, did some score 800 sectionals and took GMAT prep 1 again (about 12 days later). I got a score of 710 again 44 in quant and 42 in verbal.
So I just can't understand my poor performance on the actual test day. Can it just be put down to nerves, or should I watch out for something else?
