Hey Everyone,

I am asking for some help/guidance on what would be my best options in studying for the Quant and Verbal sections of the GMAT. To give you some background information on where I am at I recently decided to study abroad and complete a masters, however I found out that I needed a minimum of 600 in the GMAT as a prerequisite to get in to the course.

Due to time constraints and availability I sat the GMAT recently on 4 days notice without studying for the exam. I was not able to rely on any previous knowledge to help me get through the exam because I did not do any algebra, arithmetic or geometry in high school and have never done so before. To say I was ill-prepared is a huge understatement and as a consequence I scored a 310 (19 for Verbal and 12 for Quant). I have rebooked my next exam for around the 10/5 and for the next 7 weeks my current situation allows to me to dedicate at least 6 hours per day on studying for the GMAT. My area of focus for the next exam is only for the Quant and Verbal parts as the school I am applying for only takes in to account these 2 sections.

Taking my situation, previous experience and current study hours dedicated to getting a 600 in to account what sort of study guide or plan would you recommend? I would like to get an online tutor a few session per week to bring me up to scratch with the quant section so if any one has any recommendations for a suitable tutor that would be great also.

Thanks for your help.

hi,

A score of 300 shows lack of basics in Both Quant and Verbal..

But having said that and knowing that the exam was given without any prior studies, 2-3 months can get you to a score of 600 if adequate amount of time is spent with correct FOCUS.

I agree with you about 300 showing a lack of basics in both quant and verbal. However taking in to account the fact that I did not know how to answer at least 95% of the questions (at least in the quant) then I feel that my improvement will be a lot higher than others.

What sort of study guide would you recommend for me?

Hi blanglandz7,

What is the latest that you can take the GMAT and still apply to this Program? I ask because 7 weeks of study time will probably not be enough for you to raise your score 300 points. You'll likely need 3 months (or more) of consistent, guided study. Considering all of the 'math' that you're going to have to learn, you're going to have to build up your general thinking/math skills AND your GMAT Tactical/Test-taking skills. While all of that is doable with enough time, the amount of material and effort will be difficult to properly work through given what you've described.

The latest I am able to take the GMAT to gain admission in to my course is around the 2nd week of May. I understand that 7 weeks is not really a viable option in any circumstance, but taking my current situation in to account where I am not working at all and I have at least 6 solid study hours per day to dedicate myself to learning the GMAT there is always the possibility that I could achieve 600.

Taking the fact that I have all this time on my hands and that I would like to give 100% to studying for this exam over the next 7 weeks, what sort of study guide would you recommend? And do you know of any tutors that would like to do some skype sessions?

Thanks.

Hi blanglandz7,

For free math practice and help, I recommend that you set up an account at Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). The site is completely free and makes the learning a bit more fun and 'game-like' (as opposed to the dry academic approach taken by most books). While the site is vast, you should limit your studies to basic Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry.

1) If you're not able to score 600+ on Test Day, how will your plans change? Will you apply to this particular Program later on (this Fall or next year) and continue studying for the GMAT?

Thanks for the heads up with the math site! I will check it out today and work on those 3 things you have mentioned. After a week or so I will then go back and try to apply what I have learnt to some mock quant questions.

I haven't really thought too much about my options if I do not pass this exam, although I will probably continue with the GMAT preparations part-time and apply again this time next year.

Hi Blanglandz7

I am in the exact situation as you are. I also need a score of 600 to get admitted into my Msc. programme and do not have that much time left as well. I am consistently scoring around the 500s and need to improve my score. On my very first GMAT exam, I scored a 300 as well. Would you like to have set up an online study group and study together? I think this would help us both. I plan on taking the GMAT again in May as well. An online study group would be great to motivate each other as well. I made a thread about my GMAT experience, you can find it here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/1-5-year-later-and-still-not-breaking-the-600-barrier-215405.html Please let me know if you are interested :).

Hey Saiesta,

You are not too far off, if you keep at it over the next 8 weeks I am sure you will be able to get the results you want. For sure we can set up a study group, send me a pm and I'll give you my facebook details and we can sort a group chat. At the moment I am going back to bare essentials and taking the time this week to review basic quant forumlas using the khan academy website that Rich suggested. I also have found myself a tutor who may be able to help you, his prices are really affordable and he specializes in helping students prepare for the GMAT. Send me a message and we can sort something.

Cheers, Brett.
