Another disappointing story

Question

First ETS encounter. 640 (Q49, V28)

Nothing much to tell. Agree verbal is my weak link but still believe am not as bad as my score says.

I am clueless especially as my prep test score were all good (7xx). I was able to get into mid-30s in verbal.

Nonetheless, thanks everyone for being such a great community. I leart alot. I will try to stick around. Lets see if I get enough motivation to try second time.

get yourself the MGMAT verbal workout book...and give your gmat again in a few weeks...you will score over 700...I gurantee it

Yup.. verbal killed me as well.

Quant was your baby ... a tad surprised to see a 49 as opposed to a 51.

Don't worry duttist, you can do it. I scored 670 (V34 Q48) today. I think we can both reach 700. Work is the key. Verbal seems to be the weak point of everyone, but I am sure there is a method to rock verbal. You just have to look for it and establish your own strategies.

I was actually not going to post too much here anymore but DUDE... another 640 who deserves a lot better... It's been really a bad month for quite a few of us!

I'm sure you are 7xx!!! If you are not in some sort of time pressure, I'd surley give it a second try. Everyone here knows you deserve better!

This is a shocker. You must realize that this is not you and gear up for the next one. Even Q49 I cannot believe. I haven't seen anyone answer the Math questions as well as you do.

Agree with Vikram. 640 is like a kind of Magic number here. I got a 640 in my first attempt too! very low verbal score - V31 (disaster). I was totally sure that I won't repeat this even in the worst of cases if I take the test again. I got V42 the next time (though Q47 in both cases).

In your case, if you truly believe V28 is a big NO and you would do much better even if you take the test again tomorrow, you must go for the kill again. You can do well in Verbal and you have 2 more points to bag in Q.

Hey duttsit, sorry to hear about your experience. The first time I wrote the GMAT, I got 620. I even got 650 on my second try. I finally crossed the 700 barrier after my 3rd attempt only. After all that effort, I am now in b-school(LBS) and it does feel great after the effort I put in during my GMAT days. Although b-school is a long and arduous journey, so is the GMAT which took away more than 1 year of my life

. In the end, we can all get there but it is just that some will take longer to achieve their objective and I am part of those. What matters is that you got there and the longer journey might actually teach you how to be perseverant and hardworking. I strongly suggest you to take the test again and believe me, I am following active members' posts and I am confident that you can make it.

please don't give up, we're all sure that you'll score higher than 7XX if you take few weeks more to review!!! I've seen so many of your posts, verbal is not really your weak point, maybe you should spend time working more in SCs ..yes,grab the best books of it. your math score doesnot reflect you too. less than 51 is not you. yes, verbal is understandable. 

focus more on verbal less on math since you are very good in math. give your more than 80% time to verbal. there is no doubt for you to cross 700. 

as freshina suggested, probably mamhattan books best meet your requirements.

Don't worry at all dude, it happens to the best of us but let's not give up. 640 is definitely not for you, you deserve much more than this & we are all sure that you will score much more than this.

Just don't let yourself down, treat this attempt as not more than a practice test & a good learning test. Go for the kill again! :2gunfire:

duttsit, you know what....this is absurd...You deserve a 51 in Quant...50 on your worst day...I have seen so many of your DS explanations and they are not just good...they are brilliant.

As for your verbal, you say it is your weak area...I disagree...it is just not as strong (as your quant), but definitely not weak. For weeks, I have followed your answers on verbal man!! 

This is really crazy...and don't just waste time preparing from scratch or anything...your preparation is fabulous...this was just a bad day...go and schedule the exam soon..you definitely deserve a lot lot lot better..

duttsit, dont be too sad. motivate and prepare ur self for the 2nd attempt. i would recommend exactly 4 weeks from now. concentrate on verbal. dont let too much time pass away for the 2nd attempt. chris :gl
