Hey GMAT clubbers,
I've been turning to the forum for advice and strategies and have found it invaluable. As such, I'm turning to you now as I sat my GMAT recently and am so disappointed with my score. Here's a breakdown of my 'prep'...
Decided a month ago to finally sit the exam. I've been preparing on and off for about a year but with no real solid time. I dedicated the last month to studying but I'm one of those that works better under pressure so probably only really knuckled down in the last two weeks. Whilst I am fully aware that it was unreasonable to expect any huge improvements in a short space of time, I was scoring 590-680 in my practice CATs. I am aiming for 680. My verbal is strong but quant is inconsistent.
I've got the MGMAT set of books and while I find them very good, I struggle with the application of concepts in some of the more difficult questions. I want to re-sit in a month but right now I feel so mentally drained.
Any advice, suggestions or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

If you do not score as well as you would like, it is all the more necessary to get a detailed report of what you did and where you went wrong. I believe there is a nominal charge for it but could help you find pin point your weaknesses like time distribution etc. Could you share your complete score so that people here can guide you. With the inconsistent scores of 560-680 that you have been getting through CATs, I am assuming you were not putting yourself entirely under the same conditions in mocks as in real GMAT. I could be wrong assuming you got different scores in tests from different providers.
Since you have the hang of it, there won't be first time shock of a test. You will know your stuff and just focus on improving. It is best you spend early days brushing rusty concepts and do the high level questions that you will encounter more so when you get into stints of correct questions. Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so it's likely that you just have not put in enough time and effort yet to have scored higher. In that same way, the goal to raise a 550 to a 680+ in one month is likely too difficult to be considered realistic. You're likely going to have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections - and all of that work is going to take time (probably at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study). Since you appear to be facing a looming deadline, I understand if this new information might not make you happy - but you have to remember your REAL goal: to get into your first-choice Business School. Rushing in to take the GMAT, and rushing in an application that might be 'weak' in certain spots, works against that ultimate goal, so you might want to consider a later application deadline.
1) What were your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores when you scored 550?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
