Finally!!! Done with GMAT!!! Second attempt 720 Q50 V37 IR7
I wanted to give the GMAT exam for a while. 4 hours of commute and 9 hours of work made it difficult for me to set aside some time for my preparation. Finally, this April, I got some time to put my focus into GMAT when I started working from home due to COVID -19. It may be a blessing in disguise.
As I come from a curriculum that was math-intensive, I was overconfident about quant. I was very much focused on verbal section. I started off with OG and then slowly to
Manhattan books. I attended a couple of free seminars to get an idea of strategies and main ideas. I watched all the
GMATNinja videos on SC , few of the free seminars by
egmat and
gmatwhiz. Also I followed articles by
GMATNinja,
egmat, and manhattan which helped to improve if at all I have improved.
Every week I gave GMAT official mocks( from 1 to 6), my scores were from 680 to 740 for all mocks with above 48 for the quant section which reassured me that I really do not need to focus much on quant. I still had my doubts and worries about the verbal section.
I was sure about giving exams in the test center rather than at home due to the frequent construction noise around my neighborhood. As soon as the exam center opened in June, I booked the first available date, i.e, June 7th.On June 7th, after about 2 months of preparation and 2 months of lockdown, I stepped out of my home for the first time to give the exam. It was a quiet uncomfortable experience especially giving the exams with masks and gloves on. Paranoia about COVID and panic about GMAT got on to me. I graduated 10 years ago and haven't written any exams after that. Though I have very good academic records, I was out of touch for so many years and started doubting my capabilities. The exam turned out to be a disaster. I started off with Quant section.I was stuck in the first 2 questions for more than 5 minutes and by then the exam started slowly slipping away from me. I dint get time to finish about the last 8 questions. I was kind of sure about the score which I might end up with and had very little motivation to go further with verbal and somehow finished the section.
As expected, I got Q45, V33,IR8 and a score of 640.
As soon as I reached home, I booked the next available date, i.e, 27th June. Through my first experience, I understood that GMAT is not just about academic capability. It can beat one down in many more ways than one could think of. Next 20 days, I tackled as many questions I can just to avoid getting stumped when new patterns and questions are thrown at me. My main focus was to keep a cool head and my anxiety under control. I focused on Quant and Verbal equally and learned everything possible within the time frame. Posts and Inputs from
gmatclub ,
gmatclub, and @VeritasPrepKarishma were extremely helpful.(Just to brag: I have never really posted anything on any of the forums as I felt almost all topics are already well concluded. In the final week of prep, I submitted a solution for question in competition mode by Bunuel, the Quant GOD and got a Kudos from him. That really made me feel more confident.)
On the day of the exam, i.e, today, I woke up after having a good 10 hours of sleep, had proper breakfast, and left to the exam center. I was more confident today compared to my first time. In between, I gave my TOEFL as well. By now, I am accustomed to giving exams with Masks and gloves on. I knew this would be my last GMAT attempt as my office is reopening in the coming week and I would not have time to dedicate this amount of time.
To tackle my stress, I choose to do AWA and IR first, then quant and verbal. By the time, I finished AWA and IR, I got comfortable with the environment. During the break, I had some water and snacks and got refreshed. The quant section went really smooth and there was no issue of time management. For verbal, I went in with the confidence I got from the quant section.
Then the ultimate reveal of score happened. When I saw Q50, I almost broke into tears. I always considered math as my strong forte and I was devastated when I got Q45 in my first attempt. On top of it, I was extremely happy to see my final score 720 with V37. I know that there are a lot many people out there with a better verbal score, but I am content with the score I received.
I am going back to my office starting from tomorrow as the COVID restrictions are released. I am glad that this lockdown turned out to be a wonderful experience with GMAT. All thanks to
gmatclub in helping me achieve this.
