Hi all,
I wanted to share with you my GMAT experience for a long time and I was postponing it but it is about time.
I am happy with my results but I am sure that I am able to score higher easily so I might give it a last try if I feel like I need it for some scholarships or schools.
I started studying properly for the GMAT a month before the deadline for my application (not recommended at all, take it as soon as possible!), by properly I mean by carefully reading some posts in this forum and organising my study schedule to cover all the needed topics and reach my target score. After two-three weeks I saw that I had just two weeks left and I needed extra time for my essays so I had to stop preparing at all and focus on my application (luckily INSEAD delayed the deadline 2 weeks and I had enough time for my friends and mentors to review all my essays and have a well-prepared application). I then continued studying for the GMAT and I took it two weeks later, in total I feel like I spent around 6 weeks on the GMAT and 4 weeks on the essays + application process.
I was really good at math but by not using mental calculus and not being used to the GMAT questions at first I made quite some silly mistakes or misunderstood some questions for not reading carefully. Luckily in no time, I was scoring around 45-47 on Quant, it took me a bit to strengthen some of my weaknesses but I was soon getting 49's and with a really good time pacing.
On Verbal I did quite ok, scoring on the 34-40 range so I was quite confident, I did review all my errors and learned most of the GMAT own rules, in the official exams I scored 41 at both, so I was confident. I also used
GMATNinja 's videos, they are topnotch, do not hesitate to follow his previous years series first, and finish with this year's (you will cover most of the exam topics and will go from more general and lower-level to higher-level topics).
I took first the GMAT Online and the exam did not go well, I took it with the digital whiteboard and there were multiple issues with it, surprisingly I scored my personal best of Q50 despite the errors and limitations, the Verbal was more surprising at my personal worse of V28, I could not get an ESR so I could not attack my errors, but I was sure I could do much better retaking it.
To retake it I booked two weeks later in a Test Center (not pleasant experience with the mask on at all times and with other 5 individuals taking other tests and entering and leaving the room). In between I focused on improving my Verbal pace and reviewing possible mistakes, I just took two GMAT Club Quant CATs to keep my mind trained and not losing my strength.
I felt confident with the Test Center exam and I did get a good score Q49, V37, IR7, AWA 6, 700. I was a bit disappointed on going down on Quant and IR (I did score IR 8 on the Online GMAT), and I was aware of two-three silly mistakes I did in Quant, so I know I could consistently score Q50 or even Q51 if lucky and my Verbal would be able to grow still to the 40.
Anyway, so far at the moment I'm good with a 700 with the energy and confidence of being able to score higher, but I will leave it as it is unless I require a higher score (I believe I would easily reach a 720-750 if I just go back to Q50 and grow my verbal to slightly below V40).
Regards,
Pablo
