Hi everyone,
I recently scored 665 (Q89, V79, D81) on the GMAT Focus Edition. My journey from 595 to 665 was filled with unexpected twists, hard-earned lessons, and ultimately, triumph. I wanted to share this story here to highlight the fact that hard work and perseverance always pay off.
Last year, I took the GMAT Classic and scored 650. It was a decent score, but not enough for my target schools. When GMAT Focus was introduced, I saw it as a second chance. My diagnostic score of 595 (Q86, V79, D74) was a wake-up call. I needed a structured approach to crack this new format.
On the recommendation of B-school alumni friends, I enrolled in e-GMAT. Their glowing reviews promised comprehensive preparation in just a few months. I am glad I made that decision😊
Quant: From Strong to Stellar
Despite my engineering background, GMAT Focus Quant was a different beast. The time pressure was intense - 21 questions in 45 minutes demanded not just knowledge, but strategy.
I needed a strategy that would help me focus on my weaker areas and not spend unnecessary time on the topics that I was strong in. This is where e-GMAT's cementing quizzes came in.
These quizzes pinpointed my weaker areas: number properties and word problems.
Armed with this knowledge, I dove into targeted practice. I then leveraged the PACE feature of the course to understand exactly which specific areas under these sections are my gap areas. This allowed me to follow the most customized path to improve my quant score to near perfection. In Number Properties, this helped me improve from 60% to 80% accuracy for hard questions.
Data Insights: Conquering New Territory
DI was initially intimidating. Starting at D74, I wondered how I'd reach my target of 80+. The e-GMAT course broke it down into manageable sections: TPA, GT, DS, and MSR. The approach of “owning the data set”, coupled with numerous practice files and case studies, made the learning comprehensive and immersive.
A key strategy was tackling DI after solidifying my Quant and Verbal skills. This approach, suggested by my mentor, proved crucial. By the time I reached DI, I had a strong foundation to build upon. This was so crucial in TPA, where the CR skills that you picked up come to the rescue. This helped me breeze through hard questions with ease despite initial hiccups.
The result? A 7-point improvement to D81, with mock scores even reaching D83.
Verbal: A Story of Unseen Progress
Verbal was my greatest challenge, starting at V79. The e-GMAT course, particularly the Critical Reasoning section, helped me develop new strategies and improve my skills significantly. Although my test day score didn't reflect it, sticking at V79, I felt a marked improvement in my verbal abilities throughout my preparation. This reinforced an important lesson: sometimes, progress isn't always immediately visible in scores, but the skills gained are invaluable.
The Last Mile Push: Structured for Success
Enrolling in the Last Mile Push (LMP) program provided the final boost. The day-wise study plan, continuous feedback, and strategic guidance from Rashmi, my mentor were crucial in pushing my skills to the target level.
The mock analyses presented by her were crucial in my being able to execute my test-taking strategies on D-Day. I was mentally prepared for anything unexpected that might happen. Rashmi had stressed – “Expect the Unexpected” and boy, was she right!
Test Day Experience
Armed with strategies for various scenarios, I felt prepared for test day. I reached the test center early and I was asked to start with the test almost an hour before the actual time. I would have gotten flustered here, but thankfully, Rashmi and I had discussed this possibility and I was ready for this.
Also, we have hashed out strategies for how to deal with various scenarios that I might encounter during the test day. Thanks to that I was equipped to deal with the test in a confident manner.
