"645 is the New 700"
I can't do 2 + 2 hurr durr, but i canz spellz b0ss
With this post, I happily conclude my 2-month GMAT Focus journey. This is a follow-up to my earlier post '40-Point Drop: GMAT Classic to Focus'; and I want to provide rough rules of thumb for first-time GMAT Focus testers. It is my hope that some anxious person will find these words through Google, and realise some value.
GMAT Focus 1: 635 (Q77, V87, D80) - 60 hours of study
GMAT Focus 2: 645 (Q76, V88, D82) - 26 hours of official mocks and practice questions
Anecdotal Rules of Thumb
1) Time Spent and Tutors If your first mock is at 585, you can hit the universal benchmark with only 80 - 90 hours of study. I used a) Magoosh and b) the GMAT official mocks. No private tutoring was necessary. For my 2 GMAT Classic attempts, I used c) e-GMAT, but I ended up liking Magoosh's UX more.
2) Rule of 82 I'm sure some of the test preppers here would have figured this out by now. But if your goal is to hit the arbitrary 645 / 700 mark, your sections need to average out at 82 (see how my overall scores have responded to 1-point movements in Q and V).
3) 1 Correct D Answer = 1 D Point Obviously, this isn't a hard and fast rule since the test is adaptive. At some point above D84, I expect that one marginal correct answer might pump you up from D86 to D88. But I experienced:
6 mistakes = D82
8 mistakes = D80
4) Quant Has a Harder Scoring Curve Notice anything, having compared rule 3 and this rule 4? I clearly would never be able to validate this in person, as a numerically-challenged human, but if you need a >700 GMAT Focus Score, it is a non-negotiable that you get 4 - 5 Q mistakes at most, alongside a near-perfect in one other section.
7 mistakes = Q77
8 mistakes = Q76
This scoring curve might reflect how the general GMAT applicant pool has higher-than-average maths skill. Good luck to the non-STEM types like us.
