[ltr]Taking the GMAT Focus Edition online (at home) is a different beast compared to the test center experience. Based on current trends and recent reports from GMAT Club members in 2025 and early 2026, here is a comprehensive debrief of what you can expect.
1. The Technical Setup & Check-In
The check-in process usually starts 30 minutes before your appointment. You will use the Secure Browser (Respondus-based).
Online proctoring is currently handled by providers like Talview.
In 2025-2026, almost 80-90% of high scores (above 655+) taken online are flagged for review.
Strategic Advice for Your Attempt
1. The Technical Setup & Check-In
The check-in process usually starts 30 minutes before your appointment. You will use the Secure Browser (Respondus-based).
- The Room Scan: You must use your webcam to show a 360-degree view of your room, including under your desk and the ceiling.
- The Desk: It must be completely clear. No dual monitors, no speakers, no smartwatches, and no pens/paper. Only your ID and an approved whiteboard are allowed.
- Common Technical Glitch: A recurring issue in 2025 has been the "Virtual Machine Detected" error. Even if you don't have a VM, background software (like Citrix, Zoom, or certain gaming drivers) can trigger this and terminate your session immediately. Ensure all non-essential background processes are killed via Task Manager.

- Proctor Behavior: Proctors are generally less intrusive than in years past, but they are strict about "out of frame" movements. If you lean too close to the screen or rest your chin on your hand (obscuring your face), they will interrupt you via chat or voice.
- Muttering/Reading Aloud: This is a major red flag. Proctors will give you one warning if they see your lips moving or hear you whispering questions to yourself. A second violation often leads to a terminated exam.
- Breaks: You get one 10-minute break. You must stay in camera view until the proctor explicitly clears you to leave the room.

- Timeline: While your unofficial score appears on screen immediately, your "Official Score" will likely be delayed. Expect a "Pending" status for 10 to 20 business days.
- The Trigger: AI monitors your eye movements and noise levels. If you have a significant score jump from a previous attempt, a manual review of your video feed is almost guaranteed. Do not panic; most reviews clear without issue if you followed the rules.
- Physical Whiteboard: Highly recommended over the digital one. It must be no larger than 12x20 inches (30x50 cm).
- Erasability: You must show the proctor that both sides of your whiteboard are clean at the start and end of the exam.

- Check ISB/IIM Policies: Since you are targeting top schools like ISB, double-check if they are currently accepting "Online" scores for your specific intake year, as some Indian schools occasionally prefer test-center scores.
