Retake, T690 Q48 V37

Question

I just took the GMAT today. Scored T690 Q48 V37 P88. I took the first one last month and ended up canceling the score. --> screwed-up-canceled-score-83427.html

While 690 is 10 points higher than my previous high of 680 (2005), I'm disappointed because I didn't do very good on verbal. On practice tests I normally have scored over 40 on verbal. That would've got me into the 700+ zone this time.

This is driving me insane!! I think I'm going to retake it next month. I really want to break into 700. I'm applying for MBA right now but PhD is a possible option a couple of years down the road. GMAC's making so much money off of me!!! lol

hi - the GMAT total scores have been known to vary slightly, so that people with the same sections scores might get different total scores.

what phd programs are you looking to apply to? or what mba programs for that matter? 690 and 700 are not all that much different

check out the "ultimate retake" thread.. it's a sticky in this forum. that should give you some guidance as to whether you should retake your gmat

There are a few cases with a different over all score and a same breakdown of quant and verbal.

But, in the subject case - His verbal score is higher than mine but his over all score is lower( quant scores are same) :shock:

yeah, that is pretty weird, but not totally impossible.

for example, from the forums we've seen people with the same section scores have varied total scores by 10 points. so his 690 (Q48 V37) may actually be "low", whereas another person with the same section scores might have gotten a 700.

your score of 700 with Q48 V 36 may be of the "'high" variety, and any other person getting your same section scores might have instead gotten a 690.

so if we flipped the conditions around, his Q48 V 37 might have been a 700 any other day, and your Q48 V36 might have been a 690. This would seem to make the most sense. However, as we have all seen with the GMAT scoring, you never really know what to expect 8-)

Thanks for the replies. Well, I guess I must be one unlucky mother****er lolzzzz.... since other people here have achieved 700 from the same or lower scores by sections. I forget his username but there is another guy that that took the GMAT yesterday and got a 700 despite having the same Q48 V37. Haha I guess If I got just one more question right in either section I could've had a 700 lol.

@unplugged: yes my break down is correct. Q48 (83 percentile) V37 (80 percentile) T690 (88 percentile). Do you have the same percentile numbers? When did you take your exam? I took the GMAT back in 2005 and scored 680. Back then it was in the 90th percentile.

@shadowsjc: I'm applying to Ohio State (Fisher), Michigan State (Broad), Inidiana U (Kelley), UofTexas (McCombs) and Carnegie Mellon (Tepper). The problem is that my undergraduate GPA is only 3.2. PhD is a possible option after MBA. I have taken a look at your retake thread. I am debating whether to retake or not since my verbal score is below than what I expected based on practice tests and previous GMAT scores.

Seems so

I took my GMAT on 15 Sep 2009. My percentile for quant is same but for verbal, it's 78%. The overall 700 is 90%. Overtime, for a given percentile the corresponding score keeps on increasing. I guess it's a matter of time before 750 will not be 99% anymore

While I agree with shadowsjc's logic, I think 'high end of V36' can never be greater than 'low end of V37'

Let's leave it to the godforsaken company called GMAC to figure out the godforsaken algorithm of the godforsaken exam

@unplugged, a 750 is already no longer 99%. i believe that's only 760 or higher

@seseoppa, although your undergrad GPA is a little low, it's not terrible by any means. i dont think a 700-720 would have made all that much of a difference. besides, your gmat score is definitely competitive at all the schools you listed. you shouldnt be so hard on yourself... if you don't retake, then concentrate on making your app and essays very good. either way, good luck in whichever you choose
