Hi everyone - I thought I'd share my GMAT experience as I was browsing other people's experiences before my test and found them very helpful.
I sat the GMAT test yesterday - and must say I was completely thrilled with my score. (and rather surprised). 760 {Q48, V46}
I was recommended the Kaplan course by a friend so after a pathetic attempt of self-studying, I decided to go down the Kaplan route as I just didn't have the self-discipline to do it by myself.
My first diagnostic test I scored a rather sad 550. (I didn't really try hard either - but nevertheless, I knew it was far below par for me). I was actually really pleased with the Kaplan course and the online material one has access to. By completeing all the required and recommended homework and practice quizzes, doing a practice CAT every weekend, and attending the Kaplan class on Wednesday evening every week for the duration of the 8 week course, my scores began to improve, and 2 weeks before the actual GMAT I scored 680 on my last Kaplan CAT which I took at the test centre as part of Kaplan's official test day exoerience offer. This is a really really good offer that Kaplan has, as you sit in the same room as when you take the actual GMAT and everything becomes familiar. You know what to do, where to go, where the restrooms are etc. - little details that help you relax on the actually test day. One less thing to worry about, right? After this experience, I decided I would be pleased with a 700 on the actual exam (didn't want to aim unrealistically high).
So feeling ok about the test, i decided to try out the GMAT prep practice tests - and they went so badly! 620 and 640! Needless to say I started to panic majorly as I only had a week and a half left before my exam and clearly I was actually nowhere near where I needed to be. So I started studying an insane number of hours every day and the result was that my score only dropped lower and lower. The panic and stress was getting to me, so my next step was to stop studying completely the last few days before the exam, so that I could clear my mind and relax and stop self-sabotaging and loosing all my confidence. This method clearly worked as my score reflects. I suppose I also work much much better under test conditions (when I know it's the real deal) which helps. For me, it was so important to switch off for a bit before the exam, and to keep telling myself I would be fine, I just needed to focus and get on with it.
The materials I used:
-Kaplan course book, and online resources
-OG12 and OG11
-GMAT prep test 1 & 2
