(C) has been as fresh an idea to her contemporaries as they are to present day artists has been is wrong tense here since the event happened in the past and is over. Also singular verb has is incorrect anyway

Eliminate (A) and (C) because the verb was and has been, respectively, are singular.
Choice (B) conjugates was correctly, was changing it to were.
Choice (D) introduces an improper idiom with considered to be unique, so (D) can be eliminated.
Choice (E) conjugates the verb would be in the wrong tense, so (E) can be eliminated. The correct answer is (B).
