Wall-to-wall carpeting is installed in a certain hallway. The carpeting costs $4.25 per square foot. If the perimeter of the hallway (in feet) is equal to 44% of the area of the hallway (in square feet) and the hallway is 50 feet long, how much did the carpeting cost?
(A) $182.50
(B) $212.50
(C) $505.25
(D) $1,062.50
(E) $1,100.00
As the calculation we're asked to do is relatively straightforward, we'll just do it.
This is a Precise approach.
Let's label the length of the hallway as 'l' and the width as 'w'.
Then the perimeter is 2w + 2l and the area is wl. Since l=50, then the perimeter is 2w+100 and the area is 50w.
Since the perimeter is 44% of the area, then 2w+100=0.44*50w=22w --> 20w = 100 and w = 5.
So the total area is 50*5=250 and, multiplying by price per square foot gives 50*5*4.25=250*4.25 = 250*(4+0.25)=1000+62.5 = 1062.5
Note that we could also have approximated 50*5*4.25 as 50* a bit more than 20 = a bit more than 1000
(D) is our answer.
