Hi,

27M from India, IT working professional, 4+ years work ex, preparing for GMAT, intend to give the paper in around November(going for R2). It's been almost 3 months since I've started my preparation with TOP. Will be attempting first mock by this month end. Hadn't given a cold mock as I thought better to brush up with the syllabus and then go for a mock attempt.

I have this constant lingering fear that I may end up screwing up on my actual exam no matter how hard I try (and have been trying to get rid of the thought by putting in the extra effort).
Weekdays are occupied with work and 2 hours of commute, 5 day WFO.
My syllabus is almost complete and will be starting with the intensive practice module soon after, any tips on how to go about from here.
My target score is 695 and above.
I last touched quant/verbal in early 2023, since I was a defence aspirant and had prepared for aptitude/reasoning/verbal sections as part of the initial entrance exams that I gave for the military(cleared the written part for most of them).
Also I'd given IELTS last year, 7.5 overall.
Any pointers on how to alleviate the scepticism on the preparation for the exam. I am treating the exam as a make-or-break kind of thing and would only want to have one shot at it. Thank you.

  1. I agree with BadukMagician’s advice to “have fun and go for it.” Treat it like a fun game—focus on leveling up and beating each challenge instead of taking it so deadly serious. Celebrate your progress—it builds energy and momentum. Accept that there will be ups and downs; individual mock scores can fluctuate. Ultimately, strong mock scores will give you a ton of confidence going into the actual exam.
  2. You have to do what works for you, and you said you want one shot at it. Just something to consider: for most students, especially the anxious ones, it helps to bring your best focus and intensity while still knowing you can retake. It’s very common to take more than one shot and improve significantly. In my own experience, I sometimes put too much pressure on myself to get a perfect 800, but I did better when I focused on the process—just solving the problem in front of me—rather than the outcome. As Bill Walsh said, “Focus on the play, and the score takes care of itself.” Even just knowing I could retake lowered the pressure and helped me perform.
  3. Reframe any nerves as excitement. A Harvard Business School study found that people who told themselves “I’m excited” before a high-pressure task performed better than those who said “I’m calm.” It works because the body reacts the same way to nerves and excitement—fast heartbeat, sweaty palms, sharpened focus—but the label you put on it flips the script. Instead of thinking “I’m anxious,” tell yourself: “My body’s priming me to perform at my peak. This is game time, I’m excited, and I’m ready.” That turns adrenaline into fuel instead of friction.

And if the nerves or tension ever feel like too much—from time pressure, a tough problem, or just mid-exam fatigue—that’s when slow belly breathing comes in. A few deep breaths physiologically relax the body, lower the heart rate, and help you reset between sections or questions. Together, these two tools—mental reframe plus deep belly breathing—cover both sides of the coin.

Hello, I am a humanities student and haven't done any math (except for day-to-day calculations) in about 8-9 years. I want to score a 700+ on the GMAT. I have all the OG books for 2025-2026. Would these be enough? I took a mock test without any prep and scored a 435. I am really rusty with math and consequently, struggled with both Quant and DI. I have heard TTP is quite good for quant but they seem quite expensive. Could someone please suggest some resources or give me advice to improve my Quant and DI scores? And do I HAVE to buy a course to improve at Quant or can I get by with free resources like youtube videos? Please help!

Welcome!

Official guides are pretty much collections of questions so they will not help you refresh your math really. I would recommend getting the Manhattan Math foundations or Kaplan math foundations book. One is enough.

these are older books but they’re great for people starting from scratch so to speak. Alternatively you can also get a course, depends on the budget and your study mode preference.

Hey GMAT Club! 👋
I’m Danny, a mechanical engineer diving into GMAT prep after four years at 5th Axis working on CNC workholding and automation systems. Shooting for a 710+ to pivot into tech and operations-focused MBAs (thinking Sloan or Booth). Quant’s been my comfort zone, but Verbal’s already testing my patience 😂. Glad to be here what’s the #1 tip you’d give an engineer trying to balance formulas and flashcards? Let’s crush this together!
