Wharton EMBA: 6 Weeks to R1 – How to Make ItThis year, many candidates were taken off-guard when Wharton moved its Round 1 EMBA deadline, which for years has always been in the first week of December, up nearly two months to
October 12, 2022. This move is particularly significant for Wharton applicants, given their need to study for and attain a strong Executive Assessment (or GMAT/GRE) score. With two fewer months to study, many candidates have begun to panic, wondering if it is still possible to make the Round 1 deadline. They ask my advice.
My first advice: don’t panic! If you are overly anxious, you may not perform optimally on the Executive Assessment (EA). Just recognize that, of all the key components of the Wharton application, the EA is the component that usually requires the most dedicated preparation. But try to take the pressure off yourself. If you are going to try to make the Round 1 deadline, pace yourself with your EA studies as you simultaneously prepare your application. Consider these steps:
•
Essays. Preserve your ability to apply in Round 1 by beginning to draft your essays. You can do this at the same time as preparing for the EA, especially if you get the support of an excellent consultant who can help you outline your essay writing so you draft the ideal content from the beginning and do not need to do extensive re-writing.
•
Recommendations. Begin to work with your recommendation writers. Give them plenty of time to draft your recommendations so that they get them in before the deadline.
•
EA studies. Intensify your studies for the EA. Take a practice exam soon. Remember that your practice score is often 3 points higher than the score you will get on the real test. If you get a score of 159 on the practice exam, for example, your real score might be around 156. So, in that case, you may be nearly ready to undergo the real examination.
•
Resume revision and reaching out to Wharton. Revise your resume so that it is the best application resume you can generate. Application resumes differ from job resumes because they highlight additional categories that the admissions committee values when making admissions decisions. Once you have that revised resume ready, you can send it to Wharton to get their initial perspective of your candidacy. You want the resume to be as strong as possible because, in the event your EA score is slightly lower than ideal, the admissions committee may be more lenient if they like what they see, as presented through your resume.
•
Taking the EA exam and feedback from Wharton. Take the EA a week or two before the deadline. If you do not have a score you like, you can reach out to Wharton and ask them what they would like you to do. They are usually candid and specific. If the score is close enough to what they would like to see from you, they may tell you to go ahead and apply. If the score is relatively far off from a score they would like to see from you, they may tell you explicitly to wait until Round 2 to apply, and in the meantime, try to get your score higher.
Is it worth trying for Round 1? Can you succeed in Round 2?
Is it worth trying to preserve the ability to apply in Round 1? Yes, because at that time, all of the seats are still available and you will be far less affected by who else with your broad type of profile has already applied. But, your EA is important, so if you need to wait until Round 2 to apply with a more competitive EA score, you should do that.
Can you still have good odds in Round 2? Yes! So, let that fact help you approach the Round 1 deadline with dedication, not with anxiety or a sense of panic, should you try to make the Round 1 deadline in the time remaining.
